How to put rear passenger foot peg on K12RS?

OK, This may seem like a simple question to ask. How do you put a passenger foot peg on a 2001 K1200RS? There are two small springs and two ball bearings along with a small plate that goes in between the foot peg and the bracket. I've seen the diagram of how it is supposed to fit, but there doesn't seem any way that the springs can compress down enough to fit along with the ball bearings. There must be a trick to this. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I removed/replaced the rear pegs on K RAPIDO many times to install/remove the Verholen peg lowering brackets.

I just don't recall any issues/problems. The little spring goes in the hole with the little ball on top - compressing it as the peg slid in was simple, as I recall.
