Clutch will not engage

The clutch on my 89 K75C has been difficult to downshift for over two years now and would sometimes slip. Recently it slipped out of 2nd into 1st and will not work at all anymore and makes a horrible noise. I have well over 50,000 miles on it and have not lubed the spline or replaced any part of the clutch assembly. I realize that the clutch plate will eventally need replacing due to normal wear. Does this sound like the only problem or could it be more serious?

It sounds like you didn't react quick enough to the early symptoms and now there's been a chain reaction causing multiple faults and damage. It's not clear from your post whether you have tranni, clutch problems or both.

Somebody has to pull apart the clutch assembly to assess the damage and repair it. I think I'd be looking further than a clutch disc. It's rather like riding on the rear brakes that make metallic grinding noises. If the pads (clutch disc) had been replaced sooner, you can get away with changing a relatively cheap part (although expensive labor), but now more expensive damage could have been done. If the clutch disc has worn to the metal you will probably need to replace the whole assembly ($$'s - ouch), clutch slave and seals.
