k1200gt k44 drive oil change

Can anyone tell me how I drain the final drive oil from my 2006 k44 k1200gt there is just one plug on the side around the middle level do I have to suck it out? Any how to guides etc would be great thanks

The older rear drives like mine had a magnetic drain plug and filler, We can replace the oil every 6K to remove any metal particles and extend the shaft seal life.

BMW thought that the newer rear drive was so reliable you could run the gear oil sealed for 'life'.

Now that may be true of car axle diffs, but these rear drives are known for bearings and bearing cages breaking up and swarf getting into the oil, then breaking down the oil seal. I suppose they have a point that 'life' is the time up until you get failure from bearing play or oil leaking out. Then when you pull the cover for 'maintenance' the oil and metal particles will pour out. You then clean, repair and fill with new oil.

You can use a turkey baster to suck out the oil, but since the oil is not expected to have worn out, the only reason for an oil change is to remove any metal particles. That would be difficult because they may collect internally in the nooks and crannies.

Not draining the oil to feel for any gritty fragments giving you an early warning of impending doom, is peace of mind,
