Self cancelling turn indicators

Hello, I'm new to this forum and this bike. A 91 K100RS The owner's manual says the turn indicators cancel after a few seconds or a certain distance but they don't. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I can live with this problem since the indicator lights on the instrument cluster are very large and well placed but things that don't work properly are irritating.

Lets just leave it that they are supposed to self-cancel (only on "K" bikes not the "R" because of the "K" using an electronic speedometer).
The "time" to cancel, can be 15 sec. or so, the "distance" can be all the way down the block and sometime it needs the speed increased (to 25mph or so) to cancel. When used for lanechanging on the freeway they might not cancel for a 1/4mi. or so. If they indeed do not self-cancel and thats all that is wrong with the bike. Please put it in "that is one of life's little problems column".

Just to add to Brucecha's note. It's almost the kind of thing like which oil is better, or how good Avon tires are...subject to lots of discussion, but no conclusive answers.

Expect 15 flashes above, say, 35 MPH (<--one of the almost-come-to-blows figures discussed) and they should turn off. Under XX MPH, and it's distance Y (200 feet has been mentioned, YMMV).

At freeway speeds, they cancel just about the time I've moved over two lanes of traffic. (It's gotten to the point now where when I'm driving the car, the turn signal seems to always be on). If you're on the freeway, and they're still blinking after a ½ mile, sumthin's wrong.

At slow neighborhood speeds I have let them blink for 5-6 blocks and for several miles on the highway. They blink merrily along so something is wrong but it is truely a small thing. I guess this ends up in the quirk column and I'll live with it. I guess removing then cleaning the sensor at the hub would not hurt anything and may help. Thanks.
