Yes, the filter sits in the oil.

As for a filter wrench, I have no idea whether the one from Bob's
will work. I bought a cheap one at the local auto supply store and it works
just fine. If you have the new filter on hand, take it with ya to the store
and buy a cap thing that fits over the end of the filter to spin it
off. You'll be fine.

is there supposed to be a gasket on the k 1200 motor oil drain plug? i checked the dumped oil and oil pan but no gasket was found. a call to the dealership found they were closed till after new years.
THe oil drain plug itself should have a crush washer on it.
If you have a BMW car dealer or a Volkswagen dealer near you,
take the drain plug to there parts dept and get a washer for it.

The oil filter access plate, the one with the three allen head screws
has a rubber gasket washer. You should've gotten one with the new filter, if
not you should be able to re-use the old one.

The filter itself has a rubber gasket. Make sure that the old one comes
out with the old filter and isn't stuck to the engine.
