I just bought my first BMW bike end of last year - a 2006 K1200GT. I am thus new to this site as well as to BMW bikes (use to drive Honda in the past). Can someone please explain to me the following with regard to the different BMW models:

- difference between the K and the R series
- meaning of the K and the R
- meaning of the acronyms GT, LT, ST, R, RT, etc

Thanks

the difference between the K and R series is the engine, k bikes have an in-line 4 cyclinder engine while the R bikes have the opposing twin engine. i don't know if there is a specific definition for K and R other than they identify which series the bike is a part of. I have no idea what GT, ST, R or RT might mean.

I think the 'K' designation comes from Kraftrad, which was the German designation or code name for the flopped 4 engine.
I imagine 'R' comes from a similar designation.

I found these designations on a UK site.

S = Sport
R = Roadster
RS = Reisesport
RT = Reisetourer
LT = Luxustourer
GT = Grand Turismo
GS = Gelande Strasse
ST (R1200ST) = Sporttourer
ST (F650ST) = Strasse
CS (R100CS) = Classicsport
CS (F650CS) = Scarver
