That is what Escort told me when I inquired as to false laser alarms on my 1200GS. They said BMW ignitions could be the problem.

Is the problem with my V1? I don't think I would dare say the K40 is a "cheap" radar detector like the Bel and Uniden mentioned above.

No, I woudn't call a K-40 "cheap", but they spray RF like mad! I have one on both cars, and either will set off the other from half a block away!

Now the big questions are:
  1. What's causing it?
  2. What can be done about it?
I don't own a radar detector...nor plan on it. Just trying to help the folks that do.
In order to start diagnosing the problem, we need to know for sure which band. I'd guess "Laser", perhaps from Motolights (if you had them on at the time), or tail lights. I had an Escort 8500K50 (latest model) a couple of years ago that falsed lots of places on Laser, until I had to disable the Laser alert (menu item). It's replacement isn't much better, I disabled the laser alert on it too.

If it's a Valentine, and the false is on X-Band, I'd suggest that he try running it in the 'little L" setting, which reduces sensitivity to X band a bit. We always run ours in that setting, due to shopping center door openers.

I have a radar detector, in a tank bag, on my GT. My wife had a Valentine detector on the R1200RT that she just traded, and we've ridden thousands of miles with one ahead of the other, and short periods of side by side, and are usually only a few feet apart when we start them. We've NEVER had a false indication from each others bike. We do get a false sometimes from cheap detectors from cars.

My first guess is that your companion's bike is sending low voltage to his detector, which will cause the detector to alert much more quickly.

In any case, I'm sure that it's not a design problem with our GT's, as my detector works great, and so does my wife's when she's riding near me.

Valentine 1 has some info on their site on "False Alarms." One of their cures is to shut off the offending band. A trial and error method.

Another, although unlikely in this instance, was the upper brake light and tailight LED's on certain vehicles tripping the Laser band portion. The "other radar detectors" was also mentioned.

Erik It's being caused by either the alternator the electronic ignition, or both. I once had a V1 mounted on a R1100RT that when passing through a certain rpm range it would go off.. Called Valentine and they were pretty sure it was the ignition.

Radar detector and GPS on the GT

I have a V1 mounted in under the front cowling and have a Gadget guy GPS mount with a Garmin 378. Both function normally.

Any infrared or radio transmitters (CB) around?
