For those of you who have considered or have installed the CIP 7.0 update for the K1200S, K1200R or new K1200GT (K4x series) I have attached a poll.

Might need another choice ... "Wanted update but dealer says the computer is indicating no update needed and will not update"
That has actually been discussed in a couple of threads here, and is something the dealers should know about as it has been discussed on their network. All they need to do is force the update.

My dealer, Manhattan BMW was not in favor of updating my bike, but because I had complained at my 600 mile service. They decided to do it on BMW NA's okay and did it under warranty. It took 3 attempts overer several days forcing it and finally succeeded after NA told or downloaded the right stuff. In any case, it was done and I have a better bike.

You just need to be persistent and tell them to force it in...You will be better off with the upgrade !

Well I originally voted in the I'm going to wait, but went to the dealer yesterday to ask about a stalling issue I had in the past when the engine got hot and a couple other bugs. He recommended that I bring it in for the 7.0 upgrade.

Dropped it off this morning and picked it up in the afternoon and rides much better and seems to have a bit more torque. Tough to say cause I just put on the Leo Vince and only put about 50 miles on with a passenger. But got on the interstate and taking it to red-line in 3rd around 9500 the front end was trying to come up. Only has done that in 1 or 2nd previously. So not sure what percentage of what, but definetely alot smoother buzzing around a parking lot in 1st or 2nd than before.

Guess I'm happy with the upgrade and glad it was offered to me under warranty. Have to give a thanks to DeSimone for this one.

I'll have to post of the differences now when I get a chance to install the Evo air cleaners.

What is my CIP version?

How can I tell what version I am running? Can it be displayed on the screen or does the bike have to be connected to the dealer computer? Thanks.

Same here John. But, Randy, dd you have yours upgraded and what were the before symptions and what did the upgrade cure?
I did get the update, but had no serious complaint. After the update I would say that the mapping just feels more accurate. It is a lot more linear and predictable at lower engine speeds. The engine seems to have less engine braking when the throttle is closed. My fuel mileage has been consistently about 2mpg better than it was before the update, but that could also be attributed to the bike being more broken in now. The one thing I had hoped to cure was the accessory power shutting off for an instant when you turn the key on (when it is powered as retained power), but that did not change.

Thanks for the details Randy. I'm going to hang in there with 6.0 until some issue comes up.

For others benefit, my dealer, BMW Daytona doesn't seem to have any misgivings about performing the upgrade. I was told that when I want it, just bring it in.

Regards

After compaints about stalling and no defaults being found, my dealer contacted me about 7.0 update. After update, feels like a different bike, no more stalling and smoother takeoff.
Thank you Hermy's BMW of Port Clinton, Pa. Bike is 06 K12S

Got the update yesterday as "warranty" work. The dealer won't do it unless you have a complaint, so I complained.

I do notice a difference, but had gotten pretty good about driving around/adapting to the bucking bronco/fueling issue, so I can't tell so much of difference yet. The issue seemed to be much worse when the bike was hot, so I'll see over the next few days about it.

I'm most happy that my damn horn might work when I want it too now. It shut off a lot and I think I heard this will fix it!!!

It definitely feels smoother, but I can't rave about it yet...

I have to be honest, at first I thought it solved 90% of my problems, but now 1000 miles into the upgrade, I'm questioning whether or not the dealer even did the upgrade as they said. I rode another members '05 with no software update and a full aftermarket exhaust and it didnt have any of the throttle issues that mine has. Nor did it have any backfiring at all.
I think mine is a little better after the 7.0 upgrade but it is still far from perfect. The acceleration 'seems' to be more linear, but the idle still hunts and races and sounds like crap and I can make it backfire loud enough for the neighbors to call 911 thinking somebody got shot.
In the big scheme of things, its little stuff and I still enjoy the bike alot, it justs seems like it should be such an easy thing for BMW to fix.

I was just about to post about this.

I must say I though the bike was better immediately after the update than it is now, a few hundred miles later.

But you know, after the update, I was so relieved that maybe my mind simply did the rest. The bike was MUCH better, but probably not as perfect as I'd like to have thought.

Now reality sets in and I realise that it is a bike far less suited to trailing along in a traffic queue than blazing along a fast smooth road.

It's a sports bike motor, with no fly wheel.

Just look at the sports bike guys under similar circumstances.

So, for UK traffic conditions, the concept is flawed.

No doubt they'll do future updates....BUT THE THROTLE is attached to a very over direct 150hp.

Maybe a device within the throttle linkage that had the effect of giving a little elaticity to the throttle action would help.

MY QUESTION IS: ANYONE ELSE STARTED TO THINK THEIR UPDATE IS REVERTING?

More Predictable, but Still Stumbling... Predictably...

After only 50 miles on the 7.0 "upgrade", I now have a more predictable stumble at the 2,700 to 3,100 rpm range, most notably while in 2nd gear at or around 30 mph (48 kph for all you sui-side drivers out there). The fix is just to pull in the clutch lever and let out smoothly again and again and again and... Until you don't have to do 30 mph anymore.

BUT - there are certain conditions within which this stumbling occurs. Those conditions are:
1.) Heat (the internal fan is on)
2.) Trying to maintain at or near 30 mph.
3.) Usually occurs while decelerating to 30 mph from about 40 mph (in traffic) and then trying to maintain 30 mph again as the light turns green, the other cages start to move, etc...

It should be noted that I also have the full Remus exhaust system and race-flow air filters, which only amplify these conditions due to the increase in "performance".

On the lighter side, during other phases of operation, the on/off of the throttle is much more pleasant. To the point that I don't have to worry about the lash of acceleration when making a right-hander around my favorite corner. I like that!

So overall, it was an improvement, but there is still the stumbling. It's just, well, predictable!

Version 7.1?

I was at my dealer today and he told me that BMW has already released an update to 7.0.
I'm not sure what the update is for but, the dealers have to download it from the BMW web site, copy it to a flash drive, and upload it into their maintenance computer. With the update it becomes 7.1.

I don't like this feeling. The feeling that our bikes have become rolling home computers that consistently need to have updates to the software in an effort to one day "get it right." Uggg. It's as if this thing runs on MicroSoft Windows.

The other rumor is that they can only update the bikes computer a certain number of times (something like 12) before they have to replace the computer.

Hummmm? So, since my dealer was unable to get 7.0 loaded when I had it in for that, and I'm still living with the 6.0, I wonder what the patch to 7.0 is for? Does 7.1 have any updates for the KS?

I don't know. At least I got new tires and they work as advertised ;)

Where did I read it? The new update was just to make it compatible with certain ecus that wouldn't accept 7.0. So, your's might be able to be updated now.

Thank you Randy for the information on the assessory socket issue, I thought 7.0 was to resolve the shut off issue, and according to the 7.0 data sheet it says "modification to the "switch-off" behavior of the on-board socket and accessories socket:" The tech was reluctant to do a 7.0 update, but said he did, I am doubtful, the print out report shows target data status K024-06-08-500 and new part no. of program. ECU=7704097, any idea if this actually is 7.0 or a previous version. Thoughts are appreciated. Thanks, Bond

OK - I'm desperately hoping when my bike gets updated this Thursday that it will resolve the abrupt throttle issue during slow speed maneuvers, but let's not compare this to Microsoft Windows. If this were windows our little LCD displays would come up with a message saying "A fatal exception has occurred and your bike has been shut down for your protection" (This is the actual Microsoft error message - just replace the word bike with computer.) At that point the bike would stop responding and you would be returned to the beginning of your trip and have to wait 15 minutes for the bike to restart. You would have no idea why this happened and every-time you started a trip you would wonder if you were going to make it to your destination or if the trip would suddenly "reboot" and you would have to start again. I can tell you after years of being a Microsoft Certified Engineer that your bike would only do this during really long trips. It would never "reboot" on short trips or while at the dealer!

K1200R 7.0 is good

2006 K1200R (stock)
Here is my result from the 7.0 software update.
The mid RPM vibration is minimal to almost gone
The low speed throttle jump is minimized
I no longer have the starting issues when bike is cold
The bike is smoother throughout the RPM range better general rideability
The severe engine braking is lessened though I kind of liked the way is was before
The overall racy-ness of bike is toned down with the trade off of a more fluid smoothness to the ride.
Fixed fuel gauge (now indicates full when full)

Also had the recall done last month and notice with the new discs up front that the brake noise as I come to a stop has gone away.

Transmission has gotten better and better with miles. Noticeable improvement with first service. Now after about 2000 miles the bike shifts precise and solid.
I think many of the problems I read on the forum will be solved as the bike becomes broken in.

7.0 problems

Hi All,

I took my bike in to BMW to change my k12s stock exhaust to Laser hotcam, they also updated the software to 7.0k. But, my bike died on me several times when i pulled in the clutch do down shift or when i came to a stop. The bike also dies on me when it heats up in the city from time to time.

I dont know if it is the new software or it is the new bmw certified Laser exhaust. I took it for its 20k tune up and they didnt resolve the problem yet. They said that they have heard some complaints on 7.0 at least here in Italy. They told me to ride the bike for a couple of weeks and track the problem as to when it happens.

Anyone have any input or any experience?

All the best,
Shawn
