The bike has 76k miles. Started to leak to it to a local shop (not BMW) they said the the valve cover is bad. Has anyone heard of this before? They did replace the Outer gasket but dont know if they should of repalced both outer and inner. I read the bolts need to be replaced also. Any help would be great.

You can reuse the bolts. The valve covers can warp; the tech at the dealership says you can check it by putting it on a glass surface and check for gaps. When I do a valve clearance check, my Indie usually replaces only the outer gasket.

I had a leak on my 08 with 7,500 miles right by the cam chain. For mine, even a new $80 gasket didn’t fix it as the cam chain tensioner was the problem. I cut a bit of it down so the valve cover would fully seat and it has been perfect.

I had a leak on my 2009 in the same location. The guide rail on mine was pushing up on the valve cover. The dealer tech trimmed the top of the guide but that did not work. BMWNA recommended that they just replace it with a new rail under the extended warranty. You would think it would push down on the rail with the rotation of the chain. It hasn't leaked since.

I just got a leakage in the lower corner with the cam chain on my k1200S 2005 with 43k km. When you mention to change or trim the guide rail. Is guide rail the same as "lift timing-chain slide rail"??
