Hi Everyone,
I'm new to K Bikes. Had 1985 K100 RT for 6 months and am enjoying riding
it. I Have a problem with it lately as far as starting goes. The starter motor doesn't seem to engage all the time and i have to rock it back and forwards in gear to for it to engage.
The battery is fully charged so that doesn't seem to be the problem.
Can anyone help please?
Regards. Ron

The sticky Sprague clutch "starter clutch". Google that I bet you find lots of info and probably a cure if that's what it is.

Could also be a dirty starter....go there for info, under starter:

If the starter is spinning , but not turning the motor, then the starter clutch is not engaging.

If it doesn't turn, then cleaning is in order.

For both problems, rocking the bike in gear can make the bike start.

I am having the same issue. You can see if it is the starter by loosening but not removing the two bolts that hold the starter. After loosening, hit the starter button. If the starter motor is working, you will hear it but you also will see the torque move the starter housing.

I am trying Sea Foam in the oil as a fix. It seems to have helped.

I put 8 oz of this in the oil this morning, bump started the mc and did 20 miles of highway riding. The sprag clutch released on the third hit of the starter button after shutting off the engine at home. Rode tonight and the problem is gone.

Starter Troubles

Hi 97tiger885, Thanks for your reply. I will give the SeaFoam a try before pulling the starter out. Sounds like it worked for you!
Many Thanks. Ron

I wish it were so. Same symptoms this morning. Had to bump start and the clutch didnt engage until I stopped for lunch after 20 miles. I turned off the motor and felt/heard the clutch engage. Oh, well.
