K-friends... Looking at a K1200RS from the year 2003. Also looking to add some bags, a seat, etc. and calculate the costs of various upgrades Are there any differences between 2002/03/04 model years that could burn me.

Possibly jumping up to the K1200 from the K75 world. Any other advice welcome...

Nah, all the same. Some years have better colours than others,( Pacific metalic blue is definately the choice colour  ) and the later years had clear indicator lenses. Some come with cruise control and its a great feature. Also, look for a bike with the 5.5 inch rear wheel over the standard 5 inch puppy. Can't think of anything else, but others probably will....

2001-2004 were all the same, except colour differences. I also believe, however, that there were some fueling changes in later years due to tighter emission laws in some countries. The later models, I think, ran a bit leaner at idle and in the lower rev ranges, which may have contributed to cold weather stalling, cold weather start-up issues, and in some cases, a rougher (hunting) idle. There was a "silent" ECU recall to address this. Most probably didn't notice or didn't care. A Rhinewest chip would be the ideal solution.

I must agree with kiwi and others that the Pacific Metallic Blue without all that tacky striping is the BEST colour choice, hands-down :rotf: :D

Black is, errrrr, well like a lump of coal! :spank1:

Check the fuel line quick disconnects. The plastic ones break. They should be replaced with metal ones. Beemer Boneyard sells the correct version metal ones.

Chris,
If you need a seat, I have a stock RS seat off my '04 that will fit. Perfect condition for $80 plus shipping from AZ 86001.

By the way Piedmont Red is much cooler than "Atlantic Blue".

thanx

Thanx for advice all. I'm currently hunting a 2003 zebra. Got my eye on one that has been down recently and I thought I'd pounce while she is weak and vulnerable. Will be needing lotsa advice if I get this one. Looks like mostly road rash, but also a few adds to make her my daily commute. Talk soon.

p.s. Any "must-check" forums or advice groups for the 12RS besides here.

I have an 03. The years are pretty much the same. The RS seat is virtually useless beyond 1-2 hours. The upgraded GT seat works pretty well up to 4-5 hours. NOTE - comments made based on my butt, not yours. :D
I picked up a Russell during the group buy. Soooo nice during longer rides.
POI for others - I was going to get a peg lowering kit before getting the Russell seat. With the ~1"+ rise on the Russell seat, I don't think I'll need the pegs lower. You might want to consider that for your own situation.
The gas quick disconnects should be replaced as others mentioned. They are fairly easy to do. Taking all the tupperware off is the most work.
Bar backs, windshield, more tail lighting, driving lights etc. are typical add-ons. Adding the heated seat option to an RS isn't too hard or costly.
If you can get a GT for a reasonable price, consider it. I have added all the GT options to my RS except the electric windshield and leg fairing extensions. The other options have turned out to be nice to have.
Great bike, you should be happy once you get one. Good luck
