Never bought a service CD for this bike.
B-4 I starting wrenching away...

Anyone have any helpful hints as to how to most easily gain access the steering damper on a 2008 K1200GT.

I may need to replace it....minimally, I'd like to get some #s off of it.

At first, I couldn't even find it, you can barley see it there, up high under the steering head.

There is a Service Bulletin...
Not a recall.

Service Bulletin is about certain bikes where the dampener rod coating might fall off inside of dampener, block oil passages and cause STIFF steering. Which is what I got.

I fall outside of the indicated bikes for the GT (other models are affected as well) but I'm close.
Want to get a look at the mfg # on the dampener to see if it falls in the grouping that my dealer informed me of.


Read quite a bit about bad front ball joints on these bikes causing wandering bike at slow speed. This is different. Bike seems resistant to turn in.

I haven't had to remove a steering damper but I did replace the ball joints on my 07 GT. If you remove the front fairing section and the headlight it will provide a lot of access to the front suspension. Again, I didn't have to go after the steering damper but removing the headlight assembly really opens up the front end of the bike.

Bad ball joints (very common) will cause wandering and instability. If you aren't experiencing that symptom then you're probably right and it isn't the ball joints, but just to check I'd raise the front wheel of the bike and grasp the wheel carrier (forks) at the bottom and try to move it in and out. There should be zero play.

Suspecting ball joints, I rode it to a local dealer yesterday and we checked as you describe.

I pulled down on the back of the bike (I'm a certified counter weight) and the chief tech checked the front.

He popped up and said , Yep...front to back clunk / movement. We switched places and I felt it too...He lacks the necessary counterweight certification ( he's not mmmm..stocky, like me) so I only tried for a couple of seconds. It was pretty cold out, I was bundled up in a winter suit, and I didn't know quite how to position myself, but I felt it.

Can't say I ever noticed any slow speed weave, except maybe when coming to a stop. A couple times the bike seemed to veer a bit just b-4 stopping. Thought it was just me, out of practice, and unfamiliar with a new bike.

I definitely notice a strange turn in feel to the bike.

Had the bike at the same dealer for oil, final drive fluid, LED brakes lights and such a couple weeks back.
At that time,I asked the tech if he felt that the bike had a strange feel at turn in during his brief, after service test ride. He replied, yes, thought maybe it was just him though.

While we had it in the air yesterday, tech checked the dampener, seemed to function fine. No resistance to slow input, stiffened up with fast input.

Only ~ 9,000 miles.... on this bike.

Ball joint wear (more accurately termed a failure due to the low miles this occurs at) is very insidious, the degradation occurs slowly and it can be missed until one day you say... 'hmmm, this just doesn't feel right.' Let it go further and the bike becomes downright dangerous (DAMHIK...)

This problem is yet another case of BMW denial, the failure rate is sky high and often occurs at very low miles. BMW might even have the gall to call it 'wear', but it is flat-out substandard parts and/or engineering.

The good news is when you replace them it will feel like you've bought a new bike. I waited too long and it was like night and day, even temped to start loving the bike again. :D I bought it used and I honestly don't think I ever knew how it was supposed to feel until I finally stumbled onto the problem, thanks to forums like these.

There does seem to be a pattern with the ball joint issues, and that is fairly low mileage, 18K or thereabouts seems to be a common mileage for them to go. A friend had them go at 18K, got them replaced and they went again 1000 miles later? Bad batch of ball joints?

One of the threads in these many forums (there are a lot! And I can't remember which one, sorry) has pics of the old vs. new ball joint. The friction portion (Teflon? Delrin?) of the original design was too thin. The fact that it has been redesigned should tell us something.
I had the issue at 9000 miles. Slow speed wandering, and also an occasional "clunk" in turn-in on tight, low-speed corners that was alarming. It felt like I was washing out the front end.
Replaced under warranty, and the difference was astounding.

Ball Joint Recall

How can I quickly check to see if my 2007K1200GT has had the ball joint recall accomplished on it. Bought last month 2nd hand with 18900 miles on it.. Thanks Bill

There is NO ball joint recall. It was for the steering damper (BMW would call it a "campaign" ) ...Ball joints are on YOUR dime...or dollar...or credit card..or mortgage. :teeth If you can do the work yourself you can keep it out of the mortgage category :clap: .
