This job does not seem to be as simple as I had hoped - on initial inspection I note that the switch panel is located to the upper stanchion and some say that the ignition key lock assembly is fixed separately?

I might just try rotating the bars forward slightly to alleviate my wrist ache.

I was just reading a similar post on another forum with regards to a K100RS and all he had to do was make some extension straps that hold the rubber panel which the ignition switch and other switches are attached to.

If it is the same as the K100 there are just a couple of l shaped straps underneath the pad that bolt to the top handlebar clamp that need to be lengthened slightly.
