Hi, working on buying a K1200RS, I would like to know if I buy a bike and want to paint it, what is the fairing made of, is it fibreglass? I wonder if it would work to take the fairing to a paint shop with a heat booth so the paint can be baked on, would that give the best finish?

ABS plastic, but I'm not sure what version of "ABS plastic" it is. Which may or may not matter in a heat booth, but if you take the tupperware to a automotive paint shop, they should certainly know.

i had mine done at an auto shop and he used original bmw glasurit paint - I got the paint code from the dealer - looks great !
went from the oem dolphin blue to black (the fastest color)

painting the fairings is basically just like painting a car the biggest advantage to baking the finish in a paint booth is it speeds drying time, doesn't really make it any more durable. in 14 years of painting cars and bikes i have heard, seen and tryed many different ways. the most important is make sure its a quality paint such as glasurit, sikkens, ppg. and be sure they prep the parts right. the only other thing about baking the finish is it can get a bit difficult if the parts have been repaired. the factory paint code is under the seat on or around the information sticker. a good paint shop can find this and pull the correct codes. best off luck to ya.
