New to the forum. What a ton of straight to the point knowledge - this is great! Hope you can help me.
About 4 months ago I bought my first BMW, a K1200GT 2008. It only had 16000 miles on it and had been in the guy's garage for 2 years as he could no longer ride bikes.
He charged the battery and I took it for a spin. I was used to a 750 cc Honda Shadow, not this. Couldn't believe how fast, smooth and how many bells and whistles is had. It was more than ideal for my needs.
I knew the guy a bit as another parent at our kids school. I had chatted to him about our bikes 2 years ago and he raved about this BMW, never mentioned any issues at all.
But I'm finding it will randomly stall at low rpms, usually as I'm coming to a stop and pull in the clutch - it just dies or sputters and almost dies. If I give it some throttle it will stay alive. Would likely happen more when bike is cold but it has happened as I pull into work after 50 miles. Its just random and when I try to recreate the issue I'm not always successful.
The revs seem to jump up and down between 1500-3000 rpm. But again, not always.
Sometimes when I rev on the highway to pass a car I sense it hesitates and then pops forward. Not sure if that's because I'm doing 70-80 in 6th gear and that's normal or its part of the overall issue.
I have gone through the threads, seems idle and stall problems are well known and can be solved by a change to the air box or buying a booster plug. I just wonder if my situation is a bit different if the bike has been sitting for 2 years. I know the seller, he told me about the quirks of the bike but never mentioned the stalling or idle issues. I'm sure he would have if he experienced this.
When I first felt the issue I took the bike to BMW and had the annual service done, plus new tires and the steel rear wheel flange added per a recall. But the idle issue remains unchanged.
I love the bike but just don't trust it at low speed maneuvering. Damn thing died on me after I started it and went to take a (simple) tight turn in a car park.
I'd appreciate any pointers on what to check to resolve this.
