Help, give me the dirt on why I should go from my 99R11RT to a 04KGT that I'm lusting after! I loved my R11RS's but wanted more protection so I again tried a RT and, well,.....
At 6'4" I'm worried about the GT and the 800 mile days. I need some good rational or irrational advice/salesmanship here. :tim

Only thing you would have to consider due to your height is barbacks.....otherwise, you won't regret the switch...you've probably already experienced the power/smoothness difference....go gor it!

Will be the smoothess bike you've been on. Should have no regrets. Once you switch, you'll ask yourself why didn't you do that sooner!:D

As has been said get the ergs sorted for your height (I'm 5'10" and stock is spot on) and 5 gas stops later you'll be at 800 miles easy. My GT is as long legged as anything I've owned or ridden. Great weather protection, seat, a planted feel down the road, and sooo smooooth. Get the cruse control to give the R hand a rest.

I just moved from a 2002 R1150GS to a 2003 K1200RS. I do not reget the move. I spent some time on some K-bikes before I made the move. I suggest you do that. We have both a boxer and a brick in the garage. I'd much rather be on the K-bike. Like most BMW's you can always get these bikes to fit your size in most cases. The K12 has lots of options for ergo changes. Try the brick and you won't go back!

I just rode my 04 GT 90 miles to the dealer for service, today. (42 degrees and still snow on the ground!). They gave me a R1150R with 2000 miles on it as a loaner. I haven't ridden an R in a long time. I couldn't get over the vibration at low RPM and the lack of power and torque. Going thru downtown Chicago traffic, I was having to really row thru the gears. On the K it is usually 2nd gear and keep up with traffic. I am 5'10" and my knees felt really cramped. And the seat was really uncomfortable. I don't know if the R can be adjusted. I have my K footpegs on the lowest level and the seat set high. There was less buffeting from trucks, and that probably is due to the lack of fairings on the R.

I had a K100RS before. All in all, I would NOT give up a K bike for an R!

Having owned both, and never really liking the buzzing vibration of the R (I also had a surging problem) you will not be disappointed with the K. I have a GT and can't imagine wanting anything else.

Go for it!

Noslowdown,

I presently own an '04 RT that's for sale. And an '04 K RS that I will keep. I kept the RT for eight months before deciding to sell it because it took me that long to be truly convinced that the K RS can do anything the RT can do. My RT is stock, my K RS has the following mods:
barbacks
Sargent seat
Comfort windshield (the same as the K GT)
Fiamm horns
Saddle bags
Tank bag

Someone here already mentioned cruise control. It's great! Don't get a K GT without it! Other comparisons:
The RT has better wind protection
The K RS has some engine heat on my left leg
The K RS engine is so superior it overcomes anything else for me.

But it took me a while to get used to the lean forward position, even with the barbacks. One of the factors that convinced me to sell the RT was that after getting used to the K RS ergonomics I found the RT upright position too upright and my body kept wanting to lean forward. I had read other relate similar conversion to the lean forward position, when I first got my KRS I didn't think I would be one telling that story. But now that I do, the RT is for sale.

I'd say go for the K GT, it's a great bike, you won't regret it.

The game changes when you look at the 1200RT

I have an '04GT, and previously owned an '02RT, and now am looking at a '06RT. If you stack the 1200RT against the '04GT it will win in handling, weight, range, luggage, comfort and will be very close in nearly all the performance metrics. I haven't ridden the 1200RT, but most of the reports indicate it will kick the current GT's a$$ in the handling department.

Top Speed - GT 142.5 RT 137.2
Quarter Mile - GT 11.58 RT 12.02
0-60 MPH - GT 3.87 sec RT 4.08
Power to weight ration - GT 1:6.57 RT 1:7.9

The new RT has cruise, heated seat, on board computer and the same stand over height as the GT with the low seat option.

The new GT isn't out. Until it is the new RT appears to be the better touring and sport touring machine.
