FYI, the Georgia Mountain Rally by the BMWMOA of Georgia usually gets at least 600 attendees, the BRPR was 60-70, out of which, I can count 6 that attended the GMR. There may have been more, and I know of 2 more that were planning on the attending the BRPR for the first time this year, but, with the "conflict" I am not so sure now.

With the Mayhem V conflict also, have you done an informal check on how many are planning to attend this year, or is it too late to change the dates?

BTW....if I have to choose between the GMR and the BRPR it will be the BRPR rally since it is K-bike focused and a better crowd!

The problem with GMR and the problem with this date for BRPR will be the weather. The last few years the weather at GMR has sucked. It has varied in suckitude. But it has sucked. When the weather is good, there probably isn't a better riders's rally on the east coast. The roads in North GA, Western NC and Eastern TN are real good. Although not all are empty as the roads in WV.

I'm one of those folks who attends GMR. But I didn't for a couple of years. I went last year and all I got was a couple of hours of damp riding in. I dunno. BRPR had better weather last year.

I've honestly been wishing that the GA club would change the date for GMR. Maybe this year will be lucky for someone. Which ever has good weather, I'll attend.

If there is a Triumph gathering, it's not a Raid. Maybe a club meet. I'm a RAT member and took a look at the RAT Calender.

But I did finally make my reservations today and got a single king room. All the others were smoking. Not to worry though. If it even looks like it might rain there are a lot of cancellations. We're taking the week again this year to tour WVa and parts beyond.

.........What's the weather in this area like in May?

Usually mild, some thunderstorms, sometimes hot, but occasionally downright cold.

Virginia, West Virginia ... We go to a wonderful little BMW rally in Boyer, WV (Cass Rally) almost every year, and it has been mild to cold and wet, but never hot. Usually cold. One especially cold year a patron across the street at the gas station asked the attendant when it got warm (thiis was Memorial Weekend). The attendant replies, "About the first of August". When asked when winter arrived, he replied, "About the end of August".

As for the Asheville area, it could be anything. "The most famous May snow in this area was part of a late season ......... vigorous upper level low pressure system stalled over the western Carolinas for 3 days from the 5th to the 8th dropping 60 inches of snow at Mt. Pisgah."

You were IN that? They called for high winds, so we parked under the walkway between the units. It got so bad we considered grabbing our jacket liners.

Weather is a crap shoot anytime for the mountains, whether it's Virginia, West Virginia, NC, or Georgia. It will probably rain somewhere that weekend. Georgia Mountain is a great riding area, and we have lots of friends there. This year the dates coflict, and waiting until after Mother's Day placed BRPR the weekend before Memorial Weekend. So we are where we are when we are. Might as well throw out a tenative food plan - Friday noon in Marlinton WV on the river. Saturday noon in Marlinton WV on the river. (After all, Pikes is closed, so .... )

So we'll see most of you at BRPR in April,

The weather had been so nice, we wore our leathers. Needless to say, we got
soaked. It was pretty hairy at the height of the storm. Lighting struck the
Parkway about 100 feet in front of us. Rain so hard we could barely see.

trip planning

I live in California, can anyone tell me how long it would take to ride to Blue Ridge Parkway Rally at the Peaks of Otter for the May 4-7 event? And maybe a good route, or anyone else in California going? Maybe even pick someone else up on the way. I really want to do a long ride and would like to plan it out. Can someone point me in the right direction?

Dayam, dude.That's gotta be in the neighborhood of 2,500 miles one way.

Not that there's anything wrong with that

Travel time alone, by interstate will take you probably 4 days in each direction.
That leaves you with two or three days at the rally, and as long as you're in the
neighborhood ( releatively speaking, of course ) you may as well block out another three days for traveling the length of the BRP and then sampling Deals Gap and the Cherohala
Skyway on your way back west.

So, that's at least two weeks of vacation there.

Then, you gotta figure on at least a set of tires somewhere along the way. Ideally, getting them when you arrive at the BRPRally would be best, giving you fresh rubber for all of those good roads at the rally and directly after.

I like what you're planning....it shows that you understand what these bikes are all about.

Looking to ride to the Peaks of Otter?

I'm heading out to the Peaks from Fredericksburg VA around 3pm on May 4th and will be riding back on Sunday. Anyone interested in joining me, let me know.
If you haven't gone in the past to the Peaks and are considering this trip, I would encourage you to give it a shot. Lots of great roads and a really good group of folks. Last year we were heading through W.VA and a mama black bear ran across the road in the middle of our group as we were zipping along. Hiding in a tree on the side of the road was three of her cubs. Very cool. It was a great time had by all.
