My '96 K1100RS SE has started to leave a trail of white exhaust smoke on hard acceleration (or so my Risin' Sun Ridin' buddies tell me from their view behind me!) along with moderately increased oil consumption. I'm at a loss as to what might be the MORE LIKELY culprit. Conventional wisdom would say it's either valve guides or piston rings. Not wanting to spend TOO much time at $70/hr. shop flat rate for diagnosis, I'm hoping someone here can give me the benefit of their experience and point me in the more likely direction from the start.
THANKS

A 'leak down' test is the current preferred test to determine the condition of the rings and cylinder walls at TDC. Shouldn't take much longer than a compression test, consider having them both done at the same time once the spark plugs are out anyway.

Oil burning usually shows up as bluish smoke. How much oil are you using?

How many miles? How much oil is it consuming?
Does it do it only after starting or all the time?
