I own what I hope you all agree is an important motorcycle. It is the first BMW to have the now famous double wishbone front suspension system you may know as Duolever.
I am not permitted to put it on the highway here in California where I now live because it’s a British sold machine. The California DMV are reluctant to give it a registration number.
It is now over 21 years old and hopefully immune to the EPA
Dose am one know the mind of the DMV system that can advise here.

Cal DMV

One legal way to handle it is to speak to a licensed california motorcycle import/export broker. They should be able to clear all the needed paperwork for you. At a price of course.

I might suggest you look for an easier state to get the bike its first US registration then I would think after a short period of time getting it registered in Calif. would be a snap.

Dear Mr Hossack.

I rode a K1200S today for the first time so it's also the first time I've ridden a bike with your front suspension system. Just to say that I was most impressed. Many thanks for your invention.

regards

Welcome and thanks

Norman,

Welcome to sunny California and thank you very much for the front end of my KR. Best front end I've ever ridden on a motorcycle.

I think that a historical car site or group might be an avenue also. I cannot see you having any trouble registering it in California. Since it was purchased "out of state" I believe that there are avenues to pursue. I know a person who works for the DMV. Where are you located? I am in the Bay Area (San Francisco bay area that is).

Hi Norman,

I left a message for a DMV specialist I know, and just heard back from her. Give her a call, she'll be happy to assist you, no charge. (My fee is a cup of coffee...) Her name is Iris Natividad, and her number is (925) 785-6137. Have your VIN number handy, a lot depends on it. It may/may not be possible to do this.

Bill,
He's up around east Sacramento, (Granite Bay, Citrus Heights, Roseville area). I don't know if A&S motorcycles could provide any assistance, or if he's tried them yet.
My daughter lives in Citrus Heights. I am in that area all the time in the summer. Wife drives the car with the mother in law and I ride the bike. Too many nice roads to miss.

Thanks Mr. Hossack for the inovative design of the front suspension. I really appreciate all your efforts to bring the design to the production of the most advanced motorcycle of this time. Much forthought in your works.
Some of the local Chopper builders may be of help. Although their products are of new assembled parts they may have some insite as to this problem. You may have to license it in another state without so moch red tape.
I look forward to meeting you someday. Will you make any of the IMS events this winter with the intro of the new K1200GT? We would welcome you as a quest at either the BMWMOA or BMWRA National rallies.
