so I know I should check my valve clearances soon, but the rubber that is around the bolts on the covers is old and cracking. Is it a critical part of the seal, and should I try to find replacements for them? are they specially molded, or simply a viton O-ring?

just trying to prepare before I tear anything apart ;-)

They are part of the seal, and not a generic 0-ring. The bolts holding the covers on are shouldered, and pressure from the grommets is what holds the covers tight to the block. Good idea to replace them every 20 years or so.

cool, maybe I'll take it to a shop I found that used to maintain the Portuguese Police K's, they still have stocks, but are no longer an official BMW dealer.
