i suppose that this area should initiate with a Valentine One vs. Escort 8500 X50 or Bel Pro RX65

that always seems to get folks talking

Can't tell you anything about the Escort, but the V1 saved my butt a couple times. And what is the coolest thing is that it tell you if the boogie(contact) is in front of you, to your side, or to the rear. Makes a huge difference when you are out in KS I can tell you!

Both are great.

I would very much like to hear what the pros and cons are of both the V1 & Escort 8850.

I don't think you can go wrong with either one of them. They both have their merits. I think the V1 is great for a car/truck. I believe the escort is better for the bike. The V1 gives more info on the front display but I don't look at the display on the RD on the bike. I just listen for the audio warning.
htheater has both and he likes them both also.

Let's assume we have one of the above. Where's the best place to mount it on a GT?
Check out pirates site, he has a really slick mounting device for the detectors. I fashioned my own using a piece of angle iron, actually made of aluminum, that spans across the windshield brackets.

that company's reputation....
check into it
you don't want any part of them (and i'll be nice and just say that)

the only detectors you should consider these days:
Valentine One
or Passport 8500 X50 or Bel RX65 (these are the same detectors, made in the same factory with little difference between them)

Detectors

Hello all,

I would like to purchase a detector for my GT; I purchase my GT used a few weeks ago, it had 800 miles on it. The previous owner had it wired for a detector I believe, there is a phone jack wired up near my handle bars. I know a friend that has a Mallet corvette that has the same phone jack mounted on his rear view mirror. He has a V1 so I assume this is what this is for. Now, how is it possible to mount one that is removable and not be to ugly hanging out there. Do any of you mount them on your tank bag with velcro or other means. One more item; where is a good online place to purchase them? and what is the going price for one of the better names? Also, is it possible to mount one that is hidden? the reason I ask is states like Virginia a detector is outlawed I believe.

Thank you
Ben

Gotta have it

Whatever you use, (I am using the V-1), the H.A.R.D (wireless LED in the helmet) lets you keep your eyes on the road and you will not miss the warning. I cannot count the times my V-1 has saved me....
This year I added the Laser Blinder to complete the package.

Radar Mount

Ben,
Go to Cycle Gadgets's website and there you will find a RAM system for your detector. I had their brake/clutch cylinder cover that has a mini ball attached so I just added a short RAM arm and the radar holder (which was a flat piece of aluminum plate with a ball attached underneath). The radar just velcroes on to the plate with a strap for peace of mind.
Post pics when done.

Ben-

You might want to ask the previous owner which detector he was using on the bike. Both the V1 and the passport use similiar jacks, but they are not interchangable. You might also cruise over to your buddies house and try his V1 on your bikes jack.
There are a couple different mounting systems out there, look around and get what fits your persona.

Radar Detectors

I use escort 8500 X50.I weather proof them by taking the case apart and seal all openings with silicone. Also seal where the sound exits, windshield suction cups attach etc. If you are routing the audio alarm through the autocom system and wear earplugs leave the volumn control turned all the way up. A good idea to adjust the volumn to your liking under all riding conditions and then seal with silicone or clean the area around the volumn control with an alcohol wipe and seal with a strip of velcro tape. The tape sticks well enough to be water proof and can be removed and replaced about six times to adjust the volumn and still be water proof. But it is better to set it, seal it with silicone and forget it.I mount the radar detectors on my KS, RS and and R1100S under the headlight assembly centered and back about 1/4 in from the edge. On the KS I made an aluminum plate and secured it with the two existing screws on the bike in this area. I cut two slits in the plate and strap the detector to this plate with a velcro strap. I also use a Ram Mount magnetic plate from cyclegadgets.com. It has two extremely strong magnets that lock the detector via a steel plate attached to the detector. The belt and suspenders theory. It is rock solid and unobtrusive. A police officer would have to be very observant and looking for it to notice it.
I route my detector through the autocom system. Audio alarm is adjustable and impossible to miss even with ear plugs and at any speed. I have the mute button mounted on top of the clutch lever assembly. Easy to reach to mute and easy to see after muting. As long as the red LED is blinking you are still in the radar or laser beam. I run a 12 volt power source from a switched wire on the bike. Autocom sells the cord to patch the detector into its system. There are only two places to tap into the KS for power without getting a fault in the computer due to the can-bus system. Email me for more details. I use silicone dielectric grease in the sockets on the detector where the audio and power cords plug in.
I have run these detectors so modified for more than three years now on three bikes with absolutely no problems. even in torrential Rain. Advantages; clean mount, only thing exposed on the handlebars is the small mute button and red and green LED display, don't have to do dangerous gymnastics while moving trying to remove the detector if you do get pulled over, unobtrusive mount hardly noticeable, totally rock solid secure mount,I don't feel the need to remove it from the bike while parked for eating etc. since it is so well hidden and secure, not obvious as a cockpit mount would be , also if a theif takes the time to remove the velcro strap he would have to know to twist the detector to release it from the magnet otherwise it would take about 100 lbs force to pull it straight off.totally waterprof. Disadvantages. Does not detect radar or laser from the rear . I have not found this to be a problem. Labor intensive and technique sensitive. Needs to be sealed carefully and properly. It does work. I typically cruise at 90 to 100mph on the S with gusts up to 140. I don't know how anyone could ride a sport bike without a radar detector. If I didn,t have one I would soon be walking or in jail. Be careful in Canada I had a detector confiscated while in a car. They caught me with a radar detector detector. I don't think anyone has come up with a radar detector detector detector yet.
