Well, I've got the inevitable oil seal failure on my 98 RS. I'm ordering parts and want to make sure that I replace the $1.50 garbage O-Ring with one made of Viton or better. Any leads or sources?
Thanks

I don't think you'll do much better then Viton. It can stand up to continual 500 degrees F and has 3 times the ware resistance of Neoprene (standard "O"ring material). I have also machined the same material in solid round-stock form. It makes excellent crush-rings, sealing sleeves, whatever.

Plan B

You can also bypass the material that ruins the O ring - Dot 3 brake fluid as the hydraulic medium. Use Dot 5 in this system, or ATF. That way, if the servo lets go, it will leak stuff that won't ruin that crankshaft O ring. I did this on my bike (98 K1200RS - Red, of course) about 5 years ago, and no problems to date.

FYI I am also gonna bypass the ABS system when I get back from a trip to the 4 Corners area (pickup + 5th wheel camper & wife-unit + dogs). I found BMW makes a bypass-the-ABS part for this bike w/ABS II - I'll have a report when I get it all sealed up.
