Hi all, I'm thinking of purchasing a sport tourer and the K-GT is my favorite looking bike out there. I've found an '07 at a Yamaha dealer, it has 81,000 miles on it, some scrapes (looks like too close to garage door frame, etc), but looks well kept otherwise. The Yamaha dealer sent the bike to a BMW dealer to get inspected when they took it in (verified by Grassroots BMW) and they say it is ready to roll. They also faxed over verification that the cam chain jump guard had been installed. They want $5800, so I'd be about 2800 out of pocket with my trade.

The other bike I've been looking at is a '10 K13GT with 24,000 miles and is in excellent condition based on photos, it's at a BMW dealer in Champaign, IL. They've verbally assured me that all campaigns are handled, etc. which I'd expect from them. They're asking 10,000 for the bike and not as interested in my trade I think.

Since I'm new to these (I have an '85 K100 though) and not sure how much I'll love the bike...what are your comparison thoughts? I can pay the difference out of pocket on the K12, not the K13 though...unless they get really generous!

Or, how often are these bikes out there for sale? Maybe I sell mine privately and keep looking...I'm trying not to be too impulsive, but the bikes are sharp!

You would want the newest one you can find, so I would look at the 13GT which has all of the updates from previous years. Take it for a test ride because the ergonomics will be much different than your K100. It is a heavy bike, and talk to the dealer regarding pricing for services that are upcoming. These bikes are not cheap if you are having it dealer serviced all of the time. I came from a 2005 R1200RT which is a really nice touring bike, so you might want to look at those also. If you decide to look at RT's, start looking at anything over 2007 when they stopped using Servo brakes. Most service for an RT is something you can do yourself.

A bike with 83,000 miles should have had the following done A) new bearings in final drive ($400) B) new clutch ($ 400- 1600) C) new or rebuilt shocks $600 - $2000). I have the K1300GT and had all of these items completed so the bike with the 83,000 needs to have had those items completed. when I went to buy a master mechanic stated buy the K1300Gt over a K1200GT as it has all of the updates. Be sure all of the recalls / service bulletins have been completed. One fantastic machine that we will likely keep riding for years to come. Offer $8000 and enjoy.

My opinion: If you have the $$$ get the K13. The initial lower price of the K12 is nice, but may soon be eclipsed by repair costs on insanely EXPENSIVE parts on a bike with 83K miles. If you are handy you can do like me and buy ebay used replacement parts. Sort of a "Pay me now or pay me later" situation.

I've seen two low mile bikes a K1300 GT with only 8K miles and the one I bought a K1200R sport with only 6.8K miles. Both had all recalls done and were in good shape.

I think you can keep looking and find a few. If not get the K13 out of the two options. I agree with TF1200RT on the ergos, I had a K1100RS and the newer bikes are quite different. I think they are more comfortable but the K1300 had a Sargent Seat which really jammed you up into the tank I like the stock seat on the K1200 much better.

I can't give an opinion on a K1200, however I have "just" bought a K1300.

I was coming from a 2002 R1150RT (Which I still have and is for Sale if anyone wants it) :), and decided I wanted a newer bike. I considered a newer RT, but then I saw the GT; a (little) less tourer-like, with a slightly more sport riding position, and higher rev range.

I saw and agreed to buy a 2008 K1200GT, but then saw a 2010 K1300GT EE. I actually bought the bike based on photos and videos, and had it couriered to me from Ireland to the UK.

All I can say is I am glad I did! The K1300GT is an awesome machine. I have thus far only completed 2 rides, as I only got the bike yesterday. The first ride was 6 miles to work, straight out the back of the couriers van, and the next was about 15 miles home from work. Hopefully I'll get out on it over the easter weekend.

However, thus far I am totally besotted. The bike plods along at 30mph happily, granted only in 2nd gear. Open the throttle and your clocking 100 before you know it. On my bike at least, the gear changes apart from into 1st are smooth and effortless. I suppose at twice the horsepower of my RT and less weight, it should be quicker, but I would venture to say the K1300GT is the perfect bike. I can't wait to see how it handles the twisties of Wales over the next few weeks. It certainly doesn't feel heavy when its moving.

The advice to me was buy the newest one you can afford, so I went with the K1300GT, and have NO regrets, after I scraped the bottom of the piggie bank.

If you haven't made the decision already....get the K1300GT!
