Fuel display problem

Hello good folks of the K bike community. I have an 06 k1200s, with almost 30 thousand miles on it, and love it. I went for a ride tonight and yellow warning triangle came on, and the fuel bars disappeared from the display, and "Fuel" is flashing on and off, bike runs normal and tank is full of gas. I looked thru some of the stories shared regarding fuel strips, and it sounds like a common issue. Some talk about a float conversion, although it doesn't sound like a dealer conversion and would be aftermarket, some say they've 'fixed' it multiple times over a year, yikes! Does my issue sound like a fuel strip issue? I want to fix it, or have it properly fixed (ie at dealer) and would appreciate any help and insight anyone would like to share.

My fuel strip sometimes has a rest and gives up the ghost, but normally running a few tanks of fuel through the system, the gauge comes back to life.
It is a common problem. There is information out there on converting it to a float system, so do come web searching. Just putting in another strip is expensive and leaves you in the same situation down the road. Here is enough information to keep you reading for a couple of nights. (using the advanced search on the three vertical dots is a good tool)
Really three options:
1. Replace fuel strip no run retranslated free fuel. I went thru 3 strips in a year all covered under warranty but that ship has sailed
2. run distance based on mileage per tank and live without the gauge.
3. do the K1300s fuel gauge upgrade and enjoy the bike how it was meant to be.
... no run retranslated free fuel. ...
I have no idea what this phrase means. Could you please take it out of this high tech jargon and give it to me in plain English? I'm smart, but not that smart.

I just ignore all after the first three words.😀

From a poll I did here a couple weeks ago not to many people report having long term luck with the fuel strip. The conversion uses all BMW parts and provides a solid long term solution. I used my trip meter for many years after my fuel strip failed in the full position. After it started to show empty all the time I did the conversion.

im not smart enough either.. I’ll blame the iPad text correction and lack of me proofing it before hitting enter. What I meant to say was replace the fuel strip and then only run ethanol free fuel. and Honestly, replacing the strip with the K1300S floating gauge is easier than understanding my typing.

It's also easier than hunting for ethanol free fuel. When I'm traveling and running tank to tank, I'm gonna fuel up with whatever's available in the place where I stop. The 10% ethanol content isn't the root cause of the problem.

Seems to be a bit different for everyone. The Gas Buddy app will help you find ethanol free. I did extensive tests over the same routes using only ethanol free and again using only Chevron premium and my K1200S does the "clutch in bike dies" and the "hunt for idle" problems running only ethanol free. I did a write up about this on this forum if you care to search it out.

appreciate your response, thats the best case i could hope for:)
Hello again, i'd like to kindly thank you all for responding to my issue, after considering it all, I have my bike booked into Budds BMW on June 8 to have it replaced. Dealer clearly stated that it comes with a two year warranty, but thats it, so for example if it fails and needs replacing after one year, 364 days, they will replace it, but then thats it, 2 years warranty, one time! Cost including taxes will be shy of $700.00 Cdn. He said they fail possibly due to ethanol fuels, which BMW engineers never really took into account, as its likely a north american thing. Shell gas in Canada has no ethanol, which I normally use but stored it this past winter with another brand, and also first fill up was another brand, coincidence? Likely, but who knows! The second option he offered was to leave it, and do as many of you have suggested, use the odometer/tripometer to gauge distance if you're familiar with your bike plus a visual into the tank, which obviously is the lesser pain in the wallet, but if you're like me, you'll want it fixed:)
Oh, I did ask him about a K1300 fuel strip upgrade and he said that is not doable as things (ie computer) are different.
So again, I thank you all for your help on this issue, happy trails to you all!

Many members had K1300 conversion. Search the form and you'll get an idea or of what needs to be replaced and the computer can be reprogrammed on the K1200 to accepted it.

Well I know this is not correct as I did the conversion on my 2006 K1200s using all factory BMW K1300s parts. What else is the official BMW rep wrong about? Maybe that ethanol fuel is not the problem it is just that their fuel strip is junk.
It doable, many have done it as I will whe mine dies. I have a 2005 with 4,000 miles on it but got it from a friend when it had 2500 miles on it with a bad fuel strip. I had him replace it so im good fro a while but I figure it will go at some point. I have done the research on it and its not to hard. The computer will accept the k1300S or the K1200S system, you just have to tell it which system you have. Do some research, here is a start
