When I stopped to fill up for gas, I was checking the rear tire for nails/damage like I always do, and there was a sharp cut on the face of the tread about one inch from the left edge of the face of the tire, that extended clear around the tire...

It looked like something extremely sharp, like a razor blade, had been held steady against the tread of the tire, while I was riding, for at least a couple wheel turns, and had cut into the tread completely around the tire. It isn't that deep, maybe 1/32", but deeper than a mere scuff. I checked for something jammed in front of the tire between the tire and mono-arm - nothing... I'm usually pretty aware of what I run my tires over, but I never saw what made the mark, nor did I hear or feel anything unusual during my ride home.

I stopped a couple times during the ride in to work today (I commute 80 miles ea way)and the cut didn't get any worse - the tires are new with tons of tread, so I guess it isn't a hazard, just one of those things that if it happened when the tread was thin, would have been a lot more serious. I'm mostly puzzled what I could have sucked up that would have done this, and shocked I didn't notice what I hit.

Sounds like you spun the tire over a sharp rock while leaned over. Do you recall slipping a little on a wet manhole cover or wet paint lately? I remember spinning the rear on a dew covered manhole cover just a couple of days ago leaving my neighborhood and thinking that I should be smart enough to avoid it. Cheers, Jerry

I've seen this too...

...several years ago on my GSXR the same thing happened to me. I thought someone was being cute with a xacto blade but later I surmised it was a lane reflector - you know those one that separate lane and define entrance and exit ramps on highways. Here in the north east the plows grab hold of them and rip up the edge of the reflector. These things are very sharp along the edge. It wouldn't take much to rip through a motorcycle tire and make the mark we are seeing.
