Does anyone know if it is possible to bring a K1200GT into California that originally was not sold in California? I am assuming that there are additional emission controls that come on a California bike than are on bikes sold outside of California? Are emission retrofits possible to make a bike California legal?

The K1200GT meets the emission standards in all states, as do all BMW’s except the new 450

I think the rules are a little foggy, regarding mileage on the bike (assuming it's used) and all and whether it is a CA model to begin with (assuming per airhead's response that it even matters on the beemers).

might want to check out the DMV website and see what they say also.

You are correct BUT this is for bringing 49-state vehicles into California. I looked into buying an out of state bike and discovered it wasn't an issue.

Believe it's an issue if the bike has less than like 7,500 miles on it (check mileage w/ DMV)). It's some sort of bullshit dealer protectionist legislation to protect new dealer network from purchasers buying from across state-lines to save on sales taxes. It's detailed on the DMV website. I bought a low mileage bike from a guy in the military and bike was registered in Colorado. As such, DMV wouldn't transfer registration, so I had to go back to the guy, have him transfer title from CO to CA, then transfer CA title into my name.

Don't worry about bringing a bike in .There is no smog issues the only thing the good old

state is worried about is the sales tax and reg. money. I've brought in two bikes in the

past and never had a problem.

49 state bikes need 7500 miles. some bikes are good in CA and every state, like BMW's. I have registered two out of state bikes and had no problems. you just have to have the bike inspected, so make sure all the lights etc. are operational. I don't remember the fees being outrageous. i think for an RD i had it was about 125 bucks, because the sales tax was cheap but so was the registration fees.
