Does anyone know if the instrument panal is a sealed unit? I hear a rattling sound within my instrument cluster. Before removing the tupperware, I would like to know before finding out the hard way.

Each of the guages are fixed through to the white rear ABS moulding with at least 2 self tapping screws. If you haven't got something loose rattling inside, one of the guages might be flapping about and just needs the back screws tightened.

Worst case you could have my situation, which was a broken right or left hand plastic bracket moulding, holding the panel to the frame. Grab the panel with both hands and gently see if it moves about - it shouldn't.

This can arise when cowboys try to avoid taking all the plastic off to get to the panel. On my older '97 I took off both sides, screen, front nose plastic, rear screen plastic and the upper side fill pieces.

Whilst behind the panel, it's worth removing each electrical connection 1 at a time and cleaning it. Also check all your pilot lamps. Replace any black ones (there's at least 4 running all the time when lights are on.

I'll add to Voxmagna's reply that it is a real PITA to get the instruments off. In short, all the tupperware has to come off including the front of the fairing in order to get to the bolts that hold the instrument cluster in place. I did it early on on my '98 when the inside of the glass became fogged. Being anal retentive, I went to all the trouble of taking everything off so that I could clean the glass with microfiber cloth. Not a job I want to repeat. Not impossible, but definitely takes a couple of hours.
