The last two times I filled my K1200 R Sport, gas dripped out the vent/overflow from the canister. I simply filled up to and into the black neck like I always do and gas drips out the vent tube from the bottom of the canister, the last time even after riding 50 miles before stopping.
I know that the hot setup on the older R bikes [back in the 90s] was to remove the canister and plug the line to the throttle bodies, - to prevent charcoal getting into the throttle bodies [and to remove the ugly visible black canister on the right side.
Is this still advisable on the 4 cylinder K bikes, - or just and old wives tale??
Does the gas dripping out of my canister mean that I have fouled the charcoal and need to replace it – or is the dripping normal?

The problem seems to be with the canister plugging off the vent line completely due to excessive fuel until it evaporates.

As long as it can vent, there shouldn't be a problem. If it plugs up, I seem to recall some bike tank's going into negative pressure, then the pump cannot get fuel to the injectors and the bike stalls until the tank's cap is removed and you hear the "Whoosh!" of air back into into it.

In my case I did the reverse. I plugged the vent line to keep gas from running out of the tank once the tank was off the bike. Heat built up the internal pressure and it began to leak around the seal where the electrics go though into the tank. Luckily, tightening the two screws down sealed up again, but I heard the "Whoosh!" of air going out of the tank in my case - along with the fuel smell.

If you don't overfill and ride off immediately it should not be a concern. If you fill it up and then let it sit where the gas can flow out and maybe plug it, then that's bad. I fill at the beginning of a ride so it has a chance to drain off a little. If I fuel at the end of a ride, I may see and smell a bit of a leak from the overflow to the canister.
