So I hit something yesterday a piece of wood flipped up and knocked the mud flap as it’s called on real oem…right off of the bike …it’s in front of the radiator ….
from the way it’s designed looks like it channel any junk or water coming up under the front of the radiator out the front again back onto the front wheel…
im assuming this is more a cosmetic piece and it’s still safe to ride the bike without it on or am I assuming wrong …or maybe just don’t ride in the wet till I fix it ?

the kicker is the belly pan I have been wanting for over a year arrived today and the bottom of this mud flap is one of the attachment points so yeah now that’s gonna have to wait …always the way right some crap like this always happens at say a time you get something you have been dying to put on hahah

maybe yours has a different system but I have the part here in my hand and from what I’m seeing there is a hole at the bottom which directs air water etc into a channel that has those grates which face forwards …so not sure how that would help with engine cooling … will post pics below …
since it’s called a mud flap on real oem I’m just guessing that mud water etc goes into the channel and comes back out the grates at the front Which are angled down wards to chuck whatever comes into it back down to the ground …

im thinking just avoid riding in the wet which I tend to do a lot of until I have it fixed…..tomorrow will pull all the broken parts off the bike glue it all back together with jb Weld epoxy type stuff which is strong as hell and put it back on temporarily until the new parts arrive…may stay on or may just fly away hahha worth a shot though in case it holds until the now ones get here just to keep the action in place …

Captain: thanks for that ..just had a ride and went slow and made sure to avoid debris …
took off the side pieces you mentioned and got all the pieces for this …everyone of the breaks is a clean break …so tonight will epoxy them all back together and reassemble …still getting the new parts but just hoping the repair holds while I wait for the new ones so the protections are still in place …given the breaks are all very clean there’s a chance a strong glue like expoxy may hold as there is very little weight on the parts tye connectors just kinda hold the assembly in place but is not load bearing …so it may hold long enough to get the new bits here

Hi everyone and again many thanks for the input !……
wpv: great idea just went and ordered one…good to have anyways !
also want to get a hugger for the rear wheel but they are pretty difficult to find apart from the ones that are 500 that is lol
so I have repaired the old piece and it came out pretty strong because of very clean breaks…I tried snapping the parts back off but yeah they are on strong ! …put it back on for now so I have protection…there is no load on those pieces the hooks that broke off just kind of hold it in place but there’s no weight on them they are just kind of guides keeping the assembly in place so I have a feeling it will hold until the new stuff arrives …in the meantime ordered a new one off of eBay for 100 which should be here next week …. In the interim at least protections are in place for the radiator with the old one securely back in place .. a piece of junk whatever flies up will just break it again oh well but save the radiator…

in the new place where I live…. I keep the bike on A slab of concrete in the back yard so it’s safe from would be thieves ..
but to get there I have to jump over A Wooden strake about 5 inches high that lines the drive way ….ok jump over is a harsh term …I use a 2 by six on eitehr side of the strake which makes the bike only have to get over a Couple of inches so it’s just a. Small bump which I take slowly …well yesterday someone took one of my 2 by sixs and replaced it with. A Smaller piece ..I didn’t notice this when riding the bike in …when the front wheel went over the strake it landed on that small piece of wood which flipped up and knocked the mudflap and carrier right off ..hit it from behind knocking it forwards which is pRobably why the breaks were so clean and perfect hence easy to fix with epoxy..
anyways new one here in a few days and it’s protected in the interim…let’s see if it lasts haha
I have a lot of riding to do in the next week places I have to go hundreds of kms of riding back and forth to Sydney so this all was pretty bad timing given I got rid of my car …always the way hahah

Always wondered what that grate in front of the radiator was for …until now assumed it was just for looks …the carrier plate on the bottom protects the radiator …then there is that hole/ channel that leads to those slats it’s definately to direct water mud whatever that shoots up against the bottom of the bike to the front and down …really clever little device actually …channels any stuff splashing up under the bike back to the ground in front of the bike …the amount of mud etc stuck between the mud flap and the carrier tells me it was working …. Only BMW would think of a nifty little device to keep the radiator etc clean ….gotta love this brand….bet you don’t find parts like that on many other bikes ..

here’s an idea I had recently that looks pretty cool …I got a bmw badge that’s exactly the right size….used rubbery glue that won’t pull the paint off as you just run it and it peels off and is flexible and put it over the right hand side of the hole in the rear axle …I think it looks pretty cool hahha ..initially I thought the centrifugal force would spin it off but it’s been on there for several hundred kms already and holding strong …as I’m sure you guys can tell my bikes my wife..I’m obsessed with modding it hahah.

Erick: ah I hear you mate would make sense if it channeled air up and out the top onto the radiator. My one is not open at the top so whatever goes in hits the top of that channel and goes right back out the front.
although the top of it has two small holes with rubber plugs in it.Not sure what that’s for or if something should or could attach to it.
given real oem actually calls this part mudflaps I’m guessing that’s exactly what it is.

amazingly my repair so far is holding really solid. Even thinking if it stays like this I may not have to put the new one on just keep it in case this one goes eventually. At the very least will keep it as a back up.
the two clips on the Carrier on each side where it attaches to the bottom of the radiator both were snapped off and the parts remained on the screws that held them on.
one of the long arms That attaches to the top of the radiator broke off where it attaches to the slats assembly. And on the other side the clip snapped off. All the breaks were clean and perfect so glued it all back together with epoxy plastic.
before reinstalling put some major pressure on all the parts a fair amount and it felt very solid. You can’t see where the breaks were at all as it fit back together perfectly. Yeah it looks brand new feels very solid and Has held up to about 100 kms of riding so far.
I’m amazed usually small plastic pieces do not repair that strong and just break again.
I guess given the part is under no load or pressure and the clips are more like guides and hold it in place more than attach it in a strong manner tie the bike this thing may hold. The carrier on the bottom the position it’s in is wedged between the two fairing pieces would probably stay in there even without the clips as it’s wedged in well and didn’t even come off when the damage occurred but remained right there in place even though both clips broke.
so yeah if it breaks for anyone if you have all the pieces and the breaks are clean it’s fixable. Well last test is to see how long it holds .. maybe with time the vibrations break the repairs we will see I have 250 km to ride tomorrow.

I also collect coins …and often see coins up there at rediculous prices like thousands of dollars when they are not worth anywhere near the price …like an Aussie penny they put super rare in the title…. in the description go on about how rare it is and you won’t find another it’s a scheme I think hoping someone out of fomo “fear of missing out “ buys it is my guess …as I have seen it way too many times for it to be by accident constantly like that ….usually the coin is something like A Not so common coin but the actual value is a few dollars or 20 not 3k lol there seems to be A Scam every where you turn nowadays !

yes the breaks were perfect without any missing pieces …and I cleaned the area very well with rubbing alcohol before applying The epoxy …I have since done around 350 kms on the bike and it’s holding dead solid so far like it was never broken did some high speed yesterday aswell and hit some pretty bad bumps…I’m curious to see how long it holds up ..maybe permanently like you mentioned …

I already have a replacement in the mail but won’t put it on while the old one is still holding strong and you can’t see where it was broken, will keep it as a spare ! You have to remove the bolts that hang the radiator to get it off and on and those are a bastard to put back on solo

I will swing through bathhurst sometime next week heading to Sofala for some prospecting …feel like meeting up have a coffee check out bikes etc like we discussed awhile back ?

Warning for anyone that ends up having to change this mud flap out …
you may also have to take off those small front fairing pieces to replace this item or it may be tempting to remove the top ones … be warned the two top bolts also hold the radiator on and they are a real bitch to get back on solo …I had to use my knee to lift the radiator up and a hell of a lot of fiddling to get them back on just right ..
you have to be very careful not to cross thread the bolts when putting them back on ….
so yeah bare in mind that part of the job will be a bitch
I am trying to remember ..it may be possible to do it all without removing those two bolts and leaving the top piece of fairing on by just loosening the bolts ,..if it is possible to do it that way be sure and don’t remove those bolts holding the radiator on haha
