Problems, what problems? This is a BMW we don’t have problems.

I have had two K1200RS, 2002 & 2004 and these are the problems I have had.

1. Oil leak at crankshaft seal to clutch, (warranted) (2002)
2. Throttles cable sticking, replace on recall. (2002)
3. 2004 model recall on ECU (warranty)
4. Heated grip switch failed. (2002)
5. Hand grip rubbers worn out at 30,000 miles on 2002 model. 2004 has different grips.
6. Engine vent tube hose from top of engine to throttle body cracked. (2004)
7. Shocks worn out at 25,000 miles ALL MODELS
8. Rear brake pad wears out at 15,000 to 20,000 miles
9. Quick release plastic fuel fitting broken. New style available.
10. Water pump seal leaked 40,000 miles (2004)
11. Replace clutch at 37,000 miles worn out, (too many wheelies) (2004)
12. Seat cracking, have recover made, 40,000 mile, I live in the desert (2004)
13. Tires wear out.
14. Engine oil must be changed.
15. Brake fluid must be flushed.

2001 K1200RS

20,000 kilometers.

Slight weep from timing chain cover.

Nothing else.

Rock solid, well built motorcycle.

37,000 miles

1. Fork seals needed replacement
2. Rear wheel drive seal replacement ( lots of 2 up touring fully loaded)
3. Shocks 25,000
4.Fuel tank leak when new

thats it

My 2000 K12RS threw a rod at about 9,500 kms and the engine had to be replaced. The ABS control module failed shortly after the warranty ran out but they covered it anyway because it was pretty soon after. My clutch slave cylinder leaks and no amount of maintenance seems to be able to cure it so I live with it. The transmission does not shift nearly as smoothly as when it was new but I don't miss shifts because of it. And lastly there is a rattle that occurs at idle that I find annoying and have not been able to track down.

You guys seem to be covering it all up pretty quick, but the OP does not want to know what I think of some BMW mechanics and nicely stamped maintenance booklets. But did you clean/lube/line the shifter adjustment, it made a big difference on my bike.

Your rattle, could be the clutch push rod, they updated it in 2003, put a felt pad on it to sop up the brake fluid in case the slave leaks, but apparently it is more effective an an anti-rattle than anything else. So bad slave and the original push rod, may be your rattle. If the slave bearing is starting to go, that could do it. :thumb:

150,000 miles, 2003 GT

Warrantied items (extended warrenty, total 7 years, unlimited mileage):
Clutch replaced twice (last at 108,000) due to rear engine seal leaking
Fuel pump
Front shock before 600 miles
Pinion seal
Clutch slave cylinder
ECU
Paralever bearings
Heated seat (twice)

Non-warrantied:
Right hand grip (100k+ miles)

Too many tires to count.
Rear rotor (108k)
Four sets of rear brake pads
One set of front break pads (same rotors that came with the bike)
Needs a quart of oil every 2k miles. Has since 24k (when I really started paying attention).
No complaints.

Rattle? When in neutral and the clutch engaged? Goes away when you pull in the clutch? Dry clutch. Quiet compared to the dry clutch on a Ducati.

Thanks for the heads up, fellas. I never thought to look at the clutch push rod. I'll look into that.

That slave bearing has quite a lot of side play even new. :thumb:

I had that pinion seal leak too, I forgot it was under warranty.
Boy these bike suck.

I wish I had the money for newer K1300 S then I could have all new problems.

I'd share your sentiment if I had all those problems! Fortunately, I do not, as does the overwhelming majority of riders.

Every RS I see for sale in Canada is either low mileage or extremely high mileage. Either you like 'em or hate 'em. Those that like them, keep them, those that do not, sell early.

Very rarely have I encountered a brick motored BMW with any major issue here in Canada, and I've seen my fair share of bricks over the years. A few minor leaks, yes, but nothing else worth mentioning.

And yes, the K1300 riders sure have their share of issues. I've learned that after 23+ years of riding and numerous motorcycles that the grass only seems greener on the other side!

My RS is a keeper.

PS. Are you riding your RS in motorcross ? :D

04 GT 87000 miles no problems what so ever no leaks no seeps no oil burn...I do have a broken header stud...other than that just regular maint....oh... and a battery...I kinda feel lucky a little...but it was my time...

all those problems are on two bikes, I traded the 02 at 36,000 miles for the 04. the 04 now has 50,000 miles for a rider total of da da du, 86,000. But thats still at lot of problems.

I do all the repairs so the cost to fix is small. But the clutch parts did cost me $550.00 and that was with shopping around.

I do ride it like I stole it!!

:teeth Well, next-to-last-line says "No complaints"

After 150,000 miles, and only one item I had to shell out for was the heated grip (and that wasn't a heated grip replacement, just the grip itself).

Ya, it'd be wonderful if I didn't have anything break, and the oil was at the center dot when the 6k service interval rolled around, but that just doesn't always happen in real life.

I'd take that bike cross-country in heartbeat without a second thought.
