Day Two: "Inspection Day"

Insurance and registration problems already? :wtf:

So one RT is off to a flying stop due to auxiliary wiring burning up? Can't attribute that to BMW. He goofed, but it's fixed.

Entry bikes I count so far:

Touring rigs:
20 Gold Wing 1800's (One from a BMW LT since final drive crapped last time)
1 1981 Gold Wing (Some 1000cc maybe?)
5 BMW K1200LTs (any wagering on final drive failures?)
1 Victory Vision (I bet the bike finishes, if he doesn't!)
1 Harley-Davidson FLHT

Sport-Tourers:
19 Yamaha FJR1300s
11 Honda ST1300s (with one BMW convert who's final drive crapped last time)
3 Honda ST1100s
4 BMW K1200GTs (Two guys carrying a spare final drive, and Ken Meese is one! ) No K1300's entered maybe due to stalling or faulty switch-gear?
7 BMW R1200RTs
4 BMW R1150RTs
2 Kawasaki Concours 1400s
1 Moto Guzzi Norge
1 Triumph Trophy

Dual-Sport entries:
10 BMW R1200GS or GSAs
3 BMW R1150GS
1 Kawasaki KL650 single

Sport Bikes:
2 Honda CBR1000XX
1 Kawasaki ZX12R

Beaters:
2 Suzuki RE5 Rotary engines models
1 BMW R60/6 (with 512,000 miles on odometer)

No scooters this time.

Interesting commentary on the link that BMW dropped to 35% entry in 2009 from 43% in 2007 due to equipment failures. Most seem to move to Honda. H-D isn't in the long-haul.

Nice write-up about Ken Meese at the end. "Go Kenny!"
Somewhere I posted prior that BMW should sponsor this event to get back into the reliability game. Give Ken a free entry bike and sponsor him BMW AG!

Was checking out the site and didn't see where they start. Is it always different, and a different part of the country?

Seems to move around a lot. One year it started, or was it ended, in Ojai, CA at the old Widder Enterprises electric vests) place. Maybe that's when Ken got his interest peaked as it's close to home base for him?

Ought to be interesting to see what happens in the next few days. Even more if none of the BMWs tank (with the exception of the wiring smoking out of one "before" the race).

This is where they start:
Marriott Spartanburg
299 North Church Street
Spartanburg, SC 29306

Checkpoint 1 - Wednesday, August 26, 9 - 11pm Scoring opens at 5 pm.
Pheasant Run Resort
4051 East Main Street
St. Charles, IL 60174

Checkpoint 2 – Sunday, August 30, 9pm – 11pm Scoring opens at 5pm.
Doubletree Hotel Santa Ana/Orange County Airport
201 East MacArthur Boulevard
Santa Ana CA 92707

Finish – Friday, September 4, 9am.
Red Lion Inn at the Park
303 W. North River Drive
Spokane, WA 99205

From the above, I smell Bonus Points in Maine and Alaska. Maybe Florida too.

Good luck entrants!

Oh, here's their forum link: IBR Forum for 2009 Rally

Ugh! The Legendary BMW is the first to chalk up a problem in only 3 hours from the start. :phonecall

Mechanical Failure Number One
"Within three hours of the start, Rallymaster Lisa Landry received the first call from a rider with an apparently serious mechanical problem. Jim Bain reports that the clutch in his 2003 BMW K1200LT has started slipping badly. He thinks it might be the notorious “slave cylinder” failure. This is another one of the “isolated” (BMW-speak) problems this particular model has had."

Cool the Spartenburg, SC police provided an escort to get all 100 of them out of town's city limits.
Around here, they would have constituted "Gang Activity" or "Illegal Street Racing" and be arrested and/or their bikes impounded. Maybe the "Escort" was to run the the hooligans out of town? :rotf:

Ken Meese

I talked with a friend who is in contact with Ken. Right now he is sleeping! If I recall correctly, He had 6 hours sleep in the last 60 hours. Supposedly he took the Key west route and made back in time to the check point. Do not know many points he accrued but he felt he did a good job. We all know he would. His GT is running well so far. Broke 100k during this leg.

I don't get it: they're given 11 days to ride 4,136 miles (according to Google)?
Odd since the average is around 1000 miles per day for 11 days.

Maybe they didn't include the "Bonus Point" side trips?

Here are the first-leg Bonus Side trips points and items they hunt for. Some of it is humorous, and some are very odd. Didn't know how the Hatfield and McCoy's feud went on for 1,350 years though.

Jeff Earls (on a K1200GT carrying a spare final drive!) is current points leader from the top link and Jim Owens (on a R1200RT that caught fire before the race began) is in second. So at least 2 BMW's are in the front so far...knock on wood. Ken Meese is in 38th spot now.

Wish I could find a master list as to who was riding what brand and model bike. :dunno:

Okay, Nancy Oswald jumps from 47th to 16th position?

Off all the women I've known, none have been able to read a map. I've driven through cities asking the co-pilot, "Are we getting close?" Responses are, "I don't know how to read a map" and usually after we've passed the city and I have a red-flag moment and she doesn't. :spank1:

Even my old psychology teacher in college admitted it - and she was a woman! :yeow:

I demand a sex check be made of Nancy! :rotf:

Or, Ken Meese, who rose from 38th to 8th.

Third leg looks like it's really going to be strenuous.

So are you suggesting that it's hard to believe that Ken is able to read a map or that he needs the sex check! :wtf: :D :D

Trust me, I'm a girl. I may not look much like one from the neck up with the IBR haircut, but from the neck down, there's no mistaking it!

So, I guess this is a compliment of some sort? I can do what other women can't? This is some funny stuff, thanks for a great laugh!

oppps.....! :later:

I don't believe it. Even Meese said he wondered. :phonecall

Then again, I'm married to Morgan Fairchild who says it's not nice to Google yer'self either - even with an IBR haircut.

Meese is just getting his excuses in order when I beat him in 2011 :rotf: :rotf: :rotf:

TOTALLY KIDDING! TOTALLY! Ken is an unbelievable rally rider, I'm lucky to be anywhere near him in the standings!

Thanks again, that was an awesome laugh! A friend who spends a lot more time on the internet than I do found this and sent me the link.
