Hi all, I am in need of some help, before I spend a load of money trying to sort out this problem. I' ve bought a k 1100lt 1995 the bike is a genuine 26000 mile bike with service up to 19000 miles. Once the bike as reached full operating temperature It starts to get blue smoke from the exhaust and its using a bit of oil.I have done compression test while the bike was hot, the results, cyclinder 1=150, 2=150, 3=145, 4=148.BMW manual says 142.3 on all cyclinder. Can anyone please help.(The bike is not on the side )stand

Very low mileage for an over 20yr old bike.Too many short rides and gummed up oil rings?

Wouldn't surprise me.Do you have a borescope to inspect the top of the pistons? If there is carbon/oily gummy deposits on the edges that could be a clue that the oil rings are gummed up.

Could possibly be cleared with a quart of good engine oil additive in the crankcase.Rislone?

Also pretty easy to remove the crankcase cover and inspect part of the cylinder walls.I am not so sure about your compression spec.Most Ks usually show in/around 160 cold.

Thank you for the information regarding the engine blue smoke.As for the compression this information came from a Bmw online manual which says 142.3 with engine hot and throttle fully open,
Could this be wrong.I did read on one forum a guy getting 185 psi on his compress test that would suggest that mine is very low compared to his.

Was your compression test with throttle open? May make a difference.

Also the number of piston strokes required to achieve a reading.That should be pretty equal.

Right spark plugs? Too cold in the range and may not burn everything so could contribute to gumming up and increased oil consumption.Old packed up car engines with an appetite for oil,we used to put hotter plugs and a can of Rislone in them.

I don't have the K1100 manual but in the K100 or K1200 manuals your readings would be considered good,above 142.Sure they can show well above that but I wouldn't stress much on someone's online claims of 185.He may be coked up....yes I know the continental term for carboned up. :teeth

Yes throttle was fully open and the engine was well up to temp (cooling fan kicked in).I turned the engine over until the needle on compression guage wouldn't go any higher, 5 or 6 turns.
According to the BMW manaul a compression of 142 psi or above is good with the engine hot and throttle open. The bike runs well,but to be honest, feels it lacks power at low to mid range RPM's.

Is it geared at 32/11 or 31/11? Should say on the final drive next to the vent at the top.

I dont know what the gearing is,,,, that wouldnt have anything to do with the engine feeling sluggish mid range.The problem is with the engine, had enough bikes over the years to know it not running right, it feels like it not getting enough fuel,drop it down a gear, it runs great at the higher rpm's.

Fuel pressure good? No vacuum leaks? New fuel filter?New air filter?No mouse nest in the airbox? Fuel injectors professionally cleaned and returned with a balance sheet? Throttle bodies synchronized? Etc..etc...!

Go to the Motobrick forum,they know how to tune them up.

I got my K1200 at just less than your mileage. I felt the engine was 'dragging' when I rolled off the throttle. It felt very tight as though it had just rolled out of the factory. I knew nothing of the PO, but suspected it hadn't been pushed hard and these bikes have plenty of grunt. I switched the oil for a slightly lighter grade and put some engine cleaner in the tank. When I got to 30 K the bike was just as I expected it. :)

I suspect if you were to pull out a piston you might find the rings gummed up as previously suggested and still see the factory honing marks in the bores! With engine cleaner and a good thrashing you might be lucky and bring the motor back to the life it wants.
