After following the posts about the timing chain tension and the guard I decided I needed to take action.
Since I have 33k miles the oiler for the tension problem was not recommended so it looked like the only fix I could do was the chain guard. So I was ready to buy the parts needed but thought I would check for any recalls needed on my bike first.

Well the suspension recall (Dec10) hadn't been done yet so why not drop by BMW and ask what needed to be done to get my bike up to snuff.
So Saturday I talked with the service rep and took the bike in today.
Seems although BMW will not fix the tension problem my extneded warranty would. :teeth
They also have a chain guard so slap that in there while they are at it. Along with required maintenance, brake bleed, coolant change, oil change (needs done while they are in there) it looks like I shouldn't be hit too hard money wise (vs paying for the chain fix).

Lets hope it all works out. :clap:

Not bad considering I'll have a new chain out of all this and some peace of mind. :D

exteened warranty

If you own a new gen K bike the best money you will ever spend is on the extended warranty! Mine is paying $7000 for timing chain, valves and head work on 07 GT with 88,000 miles. Very sad that it needs to be fixed at all. They already paid $900 for new front master cylinder and caliper rebuild, plus 2 front wheel bearings. Waiting to need a final drive but have changed the fluid 3 times to help it last longer. Good luck y'all.

Not necessarily. When I needed my extended warranty, they simply shut me out. That was a lot of money simply wasted.

I bought the 3-year extended warranty, my factory warranty expires in May.
I know there are several different options when it comes to buying an extended warranty, and I'm hoping I bought the right one. My '08 GT has about 2000 miles on it, and I think it's prudent that I put the jump-guard in. It already has the tensioner upgrade according to the specs.
Should I wait until my warranty expires to see if the extended warranty will cover the jump-guard? Dunno. Knowing me, I'll do it myself before May.

I have a good feeling about this bike. Installing the jump-guard will give me peace of mind, and the extended warranty makes me worry less about a final drive or cruise control problem, both of which are expensive fixes.

In general, I can deal with a local breakdown without blowing a personal gasket. My fear is getting stuck in Lee Vining or Strawberry (California) with a broken bike. I also have AAA's bike/RV coverage, so maybe I should just ride and not worry about it.

Meese, I am pretty sure all warranty companies will try to get out of a claim if they can find a reason. I read your post concerning the circumstances surrounding your claim and am not really sure what went wrong or how it overheated without showing on the temp gauge.

I agree an extended warranty is expensive. I got the 7 year unlimited mileage option because at the time I was covering 1300 miles week and factory warranty expired in 5 months. I lucked out, I guess, but still don't think 88,000 highway miles should do in a BMW. I'm sure the warranty company will have a chance to fix it again in the future. Should have 160,000-180,000 miles before it runs out!

Extended Warranty Company

1951 Vbs what extended warranty company did you go with? I will need to purchase an extended warranty this summer and want to go with a company that stands by their agreements.

I used Pinnacle for the exteended warranty only because my dealership was selling it. They have been fine to deal with and would purchase from them again. That being said you should go to their website and read exactly what they cover.

If it is not listed it is not covered.
If a non-covered part is damamged by covered part they still won't pay for the non-covered part. (no part of the clutch is covered)

When I had my cam chain failure they wanted to see my maintenence records and accepted that I had changed my own oil (had receipts for oil/filter) and had my valves checked on a regular basis. They claim they are not too picky but have found two types of BMW riders; most keep up on all the recommeended maint. but a few just ride them and don't do much.

Total cost to me $237...for the regular maintenence and coolant not covered in extended warranty...

They did pay for the chain guard....oh boy a whole $7

After having my 2007 K1200GT in the shop for six weeks, I finally got it back this past weekend and I've been on it ever since.

I had a probably with a piece of the guard breaking off and doing more damage to some of the engine parts. Since I've done my maintenance at various Bay Area dealers, no one dealer had the complete history. Western Warranty asked for all work orders (no doubt to make sure I've been maintaining the bike properly). After reviewing all of the paperwork, they gave the ok for the work to be done.

Anyway, six weeks and $5400 later, I got my bike back. I had the clutched replaced ($900 but no labor as the bike was already in pieces).

I am happy to have purchased the extended warranty. If I hadn't, I would have a very expensive and very large paperweight. There is no way I could have afforded to spend $5400 on repairs.
