Hi!
When attempting to replace the battery on my 1993 K75S it attempted to start immediately as soon as
I made the cable connections. The folks at Bob's BMW (MD) suggested it was probably the starter relay
switch needed to be replaced.
It seems as if it should be an 'out with the old and in with the new' type of repair, but I don't know where
it is. Can someone point me to a website showing a picture and location?
The contacts inside of the starter relay probably "welded" together due to a low battery issue.
Sometimes this can be undone by giving the starter relay a good whack with a crescent wrench or whatever.
If that doesn't work then you need to replace the starter relay. (Disconnect the battery before doing this as the rear lead to the starter relay is always hot and you don't want to short anything accidentally.)\
The starter relay is the black relay in the right rear of the relay box.
There may or may not be (sometimes people leave them off) two clips on posts at the rear corners of the tank. Remove those if they're there and then lift the rear of the tank. You may want to disconnect the wiring connector for the fuel tank to lift the tank higher. (Remember to reconnect it later.) Then you can take the black cover off of the top of the relay box.
Thanks, Mr. "Duck", I'll try that and see how far I get.
I assume by disconnecting the wiring connector it makes it easier to get to the relay switch, but is it necessary?
While I have your attention, any ideas on replacing my K75S odometer. I'm guessing the gear inside broke and
the mileage hasn't changed since.
Thanks again for your correspondence, and if ever in south FL be sure to stop by for a cold one!
Dan
Thanks very much for these pics and the encouragement that an odometer repair can be done.
This just goes to show how crappy my local BMW repair shop is: they said I'd have to buy
a new unit for $500+ and since my bike is getting on in years they'd no longer support it
for any major repairs. I thought BMW shops took pride in their 'antique' bikes.
Anyhow, much appreciation for your support and stay safe.
Dan
Understand that relay contacts, once welded and separated, aren't clean domed surfaces any more.
They have a complementary "terrain", which makes them easier to weld again (irregular contact surfaces).
Either replace relay, or resurface contacts with 1000 grit paper.
I've resurfaced a few, then got PO'd enough to design & build a solid state relay.
Good Hunting <<<)))
