Being a new owner of a K bike, 1986 K75S, I thought it might be time to come up on the radar.

I purchased this K from a little nondescript used bike shop in Dallas. It was the "wall flower" in the back of the lot full of metric cruisers. With a price tag of $1200, 12k on the clock and FULL service records it was hard to pass up. It had some glass damage that was easy to repair. The paint had to be refreshed; not my strongest suite, replaced springs and shock and just ride. The rear splines where well lubed, checked and I know that I will have to lube the clutch splines but that will have to wait until I replace the alternator with a 50W one.

I know you guys love your guns in TExas but man you robbed the shop of that bike! Congrats on the find - the K75S is a fun and forgiving bike... ENJOY!

Update

Since I posted the pictures I made a few updates to the K. The shock was replaced by a YSS shock (best $$ spent), made a GPS mount, disconnected the clutch/side stand interlock (almost dumped the bike because of it).

As soon as I am comfortable with it in local conditions I will "test" it on a run to Little Rock (work has it's perks, mileage payed). If it passes that test I will again "shop it" and do the clutch spline lube and obtain the 50A alternator (Duck you reading?).

Now that there, see, that is the way to go. For 1200 clams, you can't go wrong. Don't tell me you can't pick these fine little bricks up for a song. You can.

One thing, though... This is the second time I have read someone make a remark along the lines of "replace the alternator with a 50W one". Fifty measly watts is a damn dim bulb, dude. Now, my R1200CLC has an 840 watt alternator. That's ample You coiuld light a minor league ballpark with that and still have juice enough to pop corn in the concession stand..OTOH, my KLR has a 180 watt alternator. Now that's wimpy. I had to put a volt meter on her because if I flip the grip heaters on low and sit at a stop, or run high beams, I will run the battery right down. I don't dare run grips and high beams simultaneously even under weigh. 180 watts ain't nothin, so 50 has got to be a misprint. Is it maybe a 50 AMP? At 12 volts, 50 amps would make 600 watts.

So. What's the story on the K75 alternator? I know I have good heated grips on mine, as well as a power outlet I never use. The battery is about the size you need to run an import hatchback (non-ABS model). So what's lacking that people want to replace the thing?

30A vs 50A

For a more tech explanation you might do a search for one of Duck's more elaborate descriptions. Short version is that 50A is more than 30A. I have saved some watts by going for HID but added heated grips and eventually running lights. If I wanted to go nuts, I can go the way of some Guzzi owners who installed a car alternator via belt drive. Light up a small ballpark but the look would be way off. Besides that, if I wanted all that light I would ride my GS with HID in all 6 lights!

And yes, it should have been A not W.
