I finally installed the radar detector. I hard wired it straight to the battery with an inline fuse using the wires supplied by LegalSpeeding.com . I did have to cut the supplied terminal since the O ring on the ground wire was too small and I did not want to use a switched power source. Put two new larger O ring terminals, bundled up the excesss wires and tucked them under the right upper panel. Stubbed out the RJ11 male end of the wire and plugged it into the H.A.R.D. display adapter that goes inline between the radar detector and the power supply wires. Plugged the adapter to the Escort 8500 X50 and installed the LED light/receiver in the helmet. Tested that the receiver and LED were working.

Once I had everything working, I installed the radar detector on the ZTechnik mirror mount. Velcroed the H.A.R.D. adapter under the radar detector via Velcro and heavy duty zip tie.

Attached are a few pictures.

Apparently there's a wiring harness near the steering stem of the bike for GPS that's switched. I'll find out on Friday when I install my radar detector. Some
guy at bmwk1200s found this. The power stays on for a minute after you switch the key off.

Yup. I have seen the connector. It is just forward of the battery and has a plastic cap on it. It has 3 wires. The wiring is part of the CANBUS system. That's why it shuts down a minute after you turn off the ignition.

If ever I install a GPS, I will hard wire it to the battery. Reason is if and when I am doing long distance rides, I'd like to keep the GPS on when stopped to account for overall average speed stopped time and onroad speed. This is important during extreme rides.
