I believe that I should have a radar detector, so I've been reading. I have had front and rear antennae/receivers in a couple of cars, but haven't seen much about remote mounting on bikes. Are those installations uncommon, or have I just missed them? If they are uncommon could someone tell me why? Thanks, Bill

I looked into this a while ago. First be careful about cage products. You need some weatherproofing for the outside bits, tolerable to vibration, with limited interaction of controls for bike riding and low power. I have a Snooper and went with my own install concepts. The detector (inc. laser) is remote mounted just above the front fender on the underside of the oil cooler air box - neat and discreet. The control unit including a GPS antennae is in the inside lid of my top box, with a small ground plane for the gps antenae. Nice and discreet, secure and dry. If you're considering gps units the remote antennae give much more freedom for fitting

Now the tricky bit. My unit has audio out to an earpiece. Didn't like riding all bugged up with wires so I made a box to drive a very bright led from the audio. The led is fitted in a hole top centre on the instrument assembly - discrete and bright! Ok I see no text display telling me what the alert is, but the led can easily be ignored if I believe it's false and doesn't annoy.

I don't believe you can get 100% protection, but anything is better than nothing. Around towns there's a lot of stuff using radar now, so you may get some alerts at points on a regular route. On long rides in unfamiliar territory they can be very useful.

After getting a couple of quick "performance awards", I too am shopping. I do not like the look of the available handlebar mounts so I've been considering the Escort remote system with laser from www.Motorcycleradar.com (Larry). He has been tremendously helpful. He has the system I'm considering on his Busa and was kind enough to send some pictures of his installation. I am not sure if I will go the hidden way due to waterfproofing issues and where I want to mount the stuff. In addition, it's about $600 for radar only and $900 including laser. But, these guys have all the good detectors and mounts so I'll probably buy from them when I finally decide which way to go.

Remote radar detector

I installed a Escort remote radar detector on a K1200LT. Radar detector hidden under fairing below headlight . Laser deflectors above license plate and on top of front fender. Control inside tape player cover. Mute button on top of gas tank. Red/green LED indicator above instrument cluster. Audio alert through autocom. It even tells you what radar band is being detected: K band, laser, etc. Escort wont sell direct. Must purchase from an installer. Which is a sports car dealer. They cost $1,500 installed in a car. I finally was able to purchase one from the BMW auto dealer in Cinncinati, Ohio. $1000 and installed it myself. Works great and not obvious at all when looking at the bike. A bit pricey and took a lot of dinking around to install. May be the only one in use on a motorcycle.

I have the " Avant Guard " and I love it, best one for me.
Check out the " Radar Visual Alert " by Marc Parnes at www.MarcParnes.com . I can move the shelf so it will shine right in my eyes, to tip me off.

Just do it!

Go buy a V1 or an escort 8500, grab the avant mount from Pirates site (or fashion your own mount from a piece of angle Aluminum that is what I opted), don't forget to order the direct wiring setup to power the unit (or install a marine grade cigarette lighter - information can be located at pirates how-to page), while you are ordering the avant mount you might as well get a HARD system from pirates site as well (don't forget to get the extra batteries, you'll need them). Mount everything and have fun!!!

If you haven't found pirates site, well then - do an internet search for "pirate K12RS". I don't want to supply the website, it would be like free advertising for him, plus he doesn't pay me... actually I end up paying him! I find this ironic.

Beltronics Cordless Express 946

I have been riding with a Cordless, battery powered Beltronic Express 946 for several years and is very happy with it. ( I have not had a speeding ticket ever since).
I scan the Beltonic website but I don't know what the new cordless models are called.
The detector fits into a chest-high pocket on my jacket(s). and a remote speaker is put into the helmet. When the speaker beeps, I roll off the throttle...it is that simple.
The benefit of have a cordless is that it is extremely easy to install..and you don't end up having it stolen like a cord one if you forgot it on your bike.
If you have more than one bike, it also is very easy to switch.
I had worries of riding in rain for a while....but I had it soaked more than a few times (westcoast weather as you appreicate at Victoria).. It stop working when fully soaked, but after a few days of just leaving it lying around indoors, it works fine...so no problems of getting it wet.

I just did a search on this unit and it looks good. One question, What happens when the detector goes into auto-shutdown after finging no signals for 1 hour? Do you manuanny have to remember to re-start it every time it auto-stops?

Beltronic cordless radar detector

Hi Bruce,
I had not had the problem with the auto shut down. There is enough motion while normal riding to not to worry about that.
However, it tends to eat batteries, so I buy them at Costco, a large pack and leave some spares in my tailbag.
I have 3 jackets that I wear while riding, depending on the weather. For my leather jacket, I had the seamtress sew a leather pocket on. My Nylon Winter jacket and my summer jean/kevlar jacket both already have breast pockets.
It problaby doesn't have the range of the upscale detectors like passport or Valentine, but it is a much easier installation.

Seems like after reading all the posts I've decided to do this. Since I already own the latest V1, I will buy the Pirates (Jerry's) Advant mounting bracket, order the V1 sound adapter and go with the Parnes 5 light LED light notification system. Has anybody had trouble with any of these parts? I know the LED notification system is questionable about being seen and reaction time by the rider but I'll risk it because I hate to be "tied" to the bike with wires or keep having to have on hand, on demand replacement batteries for a remote unit.
What say the group? Up or Down!

I don't have much experience with my new V1; after i got it I went to Florida for a few days and took it along to fool with. I put it on the windshield of the rented car and drove across the state on alligator Alley. Damned if it didn't give me a lot of warning on the four traps I passed. It seemed that the different tones (beep vs. brap) conveyed a lot of useful information.

In another thread I asked about the Radar Screamer and was told in a PM that it just makes a sound of its own....that you lose the various tones generated by the V1. That would be the case with the various LED displays as well. I don't particularly like the idea of being cabled to the bike all the time either, but I think it might come to that.
