Hello
When the bike is cold, hear the 'knocking' sound while running. It eventually goes away once hot. Is it the pistons, spark plugs, gremlins? Oil is at the proper level. Any help would be great.
Thanks!

Probably piston slap (too much clearance between piston sides and cylinder bore) that goes away once everything heats up and expands.

Could also be conrod big end to crank clearance too large, but that doesn't normally go away with temperature.

Without audio or video it's hard to determine.

Thanks Eric
It really warmed up this afternoon to 5C from 2C and the knocking stopped. I guess it was still a little warm from starting it earlier. Great to hear the purr and not the knock!

That cold be sure your using 5W40 oil. You need to get some oil circulating quickly, so that 5 weight is important. Easy loads until warmed up.

Use Motul 5W-40 full synthetic.
Ah Eric, you haven't experienced life till you have ice in your beard and your ears are frostbitten. Can I live in Australia?

Last November 4th I took off from Northern Idaho heading over to the coast and then to Phoenix on my FJR1300 and the temp was 34 deg. 70 miles down the I had ice on my windshield. Stayed 32-45 for the next several days. I was pushing my luck on that ride.

I think you're hearing the clutch pack. When you hear the noise, squeeze the clutch lever. It should die out. My 1200 makes the same noise on start-up when cold. Seems like it's idling ever so slightly less smooth when the engine is cold and makes the rpm fluctuate just enough to make the clutch rattle

Hi DR
I tried pulling in the clutch and revving the engine and the noise persisted. However now it has stopped making the noise so I guess it was too cold. The noise wasn't coming from the clutch, it was coming from the top end of the cylinders.
Thanks.
