My K1200, used to get normal fuel readings, and would travel 140-190 mile range, depending on right hand. When the "low range " light came on, it tells you your range on the dash pretty accurately, one time it even went a bit further than it called out, by quite a few miles. Then a few years ago one day it said I had 15 miles or so to go, so I decided I was good to make it 6 miles home, HOPE! she ran out with about 11 miles to go showing! The reason for my inquiry, is now it seems to have gotten WAY less accurate? the other day it left me stranded with 33 miles to go showing? Anyone know why the distance counter might be off? over the years. I haven't done a proper fuel reading ever, meaning filling it, running it dry, to see if my gauge is accurate.

The "strip" is likely failing. One day it will not work at all. There are a few links within this forum on how to "zap" it with a grille igniter where the four slim pins go into the pump assembly. This works most of the time. Your other options are a replacement (relatively new part number) strip from BMW, or retrofitting a float from a 13 series K4X, or that kewl Spanish replacement that is more robust than the OEM strip.
