Most cracking of the original aluminium flanges was attributed (by a BMWNA technical rep I spoke to off the record at a dealer body meeting) to overtorquing of the T50 Torx wheel lugs and brake disc mount area - still, they should not have.
That excuse was an attempt by BMW to weasel out of their responsibilities by blaming the customer, as they are known to do. I was meticulous in torquing the rear wheel bolts in at 60 Nm but still the flange developed cracks at all 5 holes.
 
Well, just verified with the trusty magnet and the photos kindly provided that my 09GT does, in fact, have the later steel final drive flange installed.

Customer? I didn't use that word.

I've watched well-paid techs in dealerships, who are in a hurry, swing a 14" breaker bar on that puny screw. Damn the torque wrench, full speed ahead.
